Mohammed Shami’s absence from the Test squad for the England series has raised questions about his future. Initially, there was anticipation of his return after he was observed training with a specialized ball at Sunrisers Hyderabad. This excitement was short-lived when his name was omitted from the squad announcement. Shami played in the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia but was subsequently excluded from the Australia tour due to fitness concerns. According to a BCCI official, the selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, valued Shami’s experience, especially with Jasprit Bumrah’s limited availability. However, Shami’s uncertainty regarding his fitness influenced the selectors’ decision. The official emphasized that fitness, not form, was the reason for his exclusion, and that his presence was considered crucial. The report indicates that Shami is slated to feature in the Duleep Trophy 2025, commencing on August 28, with the East Zone vs. North Zone quarter-final taking place at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
