The first Test between England and India at Leeds witnessed a commanding performance by the Indian side, who reached 359/3. Shubman Gill, the Indian captain, played a stellar innings, scoring a century. Gill and Rishabh Pant, his deputy, were on 127 and 65 respectively at one stage. Ben Stokes was successful in dismissing centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal after the resumption of the final session. India had reached 92/2 by lunch, with Gill continuing his innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. The opening partnership between Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 91 runs in Headingley during the first session. England, however, managed to take two wickets in five balls to finish the session on a high note. B Sai Sudharsan, who was making his debut for India, was dismissed for a duck.
