Jannik Sinner, currently ranked number one in the world, is battling to regain fitness before the upcoming US Open in 2025. A sudden illness forced him to retire from the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz and subsequently withdraw from the mixed doubles event. In the Cincinnati final, Sinner appeared unwell from the start, conceding the first seven points and retiring early in the first set. He showed signs of distress, including difficulty breathing and stomach issues, before making the decision to withdraw. Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill, revealed that a virus caused his retirement and provided an update on his recovery. Cahill indicated Sinner is resting and anticipates a return to the court by Thursday, expressing optimism about his readiness for the US Open. The match retirement puts Sinner’s US Open title defense in jeopardy.
