A sorrowful event unfolded during the Asia Cup 2025 as Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage learned of his father’s death. Suranga Wellalage passed away from a heart attack on September 18. The news arrived just as Sri Lanka finished their match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. Russell Arnold, now a pundit, announced the news during the post-match analysis. Subsequently, team officials informed Dunith, and a photo showing the team manager comforting him became widespread. The late Suranga Wellalage was a notable cricketer, having captained Prince of Wales College when Arnold led St. Peter’s College. Sanath Jayasuriya and the team manager were seen consoling the young cricketer. This tragic incident occurred immediately following Sri Lanka’s win against Afghanistan, which secured their spot in the Super 4s. Kusal Mendis scored a match-winning 74*, with Kamindu Mendis contributing 28 runs. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi displayed a strong performance, including five sixes against Wellalage’s bowling in the 20th over. Sri Lanka, however, advanced to the next stage to compete against India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
