With this, China will also be able to compete as the production base of these companies. This new rule is part of the Chinese government’s ongoing efforts to tighten its control over apps in the country. The report further suggests that developers must have a company in China or work with a local publisher to obtain the license. This requirement has made it difficult for many foreign apps to be listed on the China App Store. Under the new rules, Apple will no longer be able to list unregistered foreign apps on its China App Store from next July. Chinese officials say new rules are needed to crack down on online scams, pornography and other harmful content. However, critics say the rules are actually about giving the Chinese government more control over what apps people can use in China. China already blocks many popular foreign social media like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. China has been blocking the websites of apps, but iPhone users in China download their desired apps from Apple’s App Store by using unauthorized VPN service. However, to deal with this, the country’s Information Technology Ministry had issued these new rules in July, after which in the future, Apple will not be able to list such apps in its China App Store, whose operators are not registered with the government. This new rule is a big blow for foreign app developers and users who want to use popular foreign apps available on a large scale.
