  • WATCH: Axar Patel Hits Back To Back Boundaries To Bring Up 50 Against India C In Duleep Trophy | cricket news

Axar Patel brought India D back into the game with a counter-attacking 86 following a disastrous start before picking up two timely wickets against India C for a standout effort on day one of the Duleep Trophy contest on Thursday. India C pacers Anshul Kamboj (2/47) and Vijaykumar Vyshak (3/19) made use of a helping pitch to run through the India D batting, leaving them in a desperate state at 48 for six.

Batting at number seven, Axar began cautiously before going ballistic to make 86 off 118 balls, singlehandedly taking India D to 164 all out in 48.3 overs. In response, India C were 91 for four at stumps on day one, trailing India D by 73 runs. Following pacer Harshit Rana’s twin strike in the first 10 overs, Axar got rid of Aryan Juyal (12) and Rajat Patidar (13) to make a big impact on the game.

Wicketkeeper batsman Abhishek Porel (32 batting) was impressive for India C and was battling alongside Baba Indrajith (14 batting) at close of play. Axar dominated the India C bowlers earlier in the day after the majority of the batters fell to reckless strokeplay. The southpaw, who has impressed with the bat both in red and white ball games for India in the recent past, hammered as many half a dozen sixes. He especially enjoyed batting against fellow left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, clobbering him for three maximums. Axar used the slog sweep to release the pressure early on in his innings before dispatching Suthar for back to back sixes in the 39th over. Some of the shot selection from other batters left a lot to be desired. While skipper Shreyas Iyer (9) fell to a beauty from Vyshak, opener Atharva Taide (4) and Devdutt Padikkal (0) tried to force the pace way too early in their innings. Taide went for a pull on the fifth ball of the day and was caught at fine leg while Padikkal was caught at cover by opposition skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, falling to a regulation ball from Vyshak.

Brief scores: India D: 164 all out in 48.3 overs (Axar Patel 86; Vijaykumar Vyshak 3/19). India C: 91 for four in 33 overs (Abhishek Porel 32 batting; Axar Patel 2/16).

Star batter Suryakumar Yadav stayed put on second position in the latest ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings, which also features Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made significant progress following his exploits in the ongoing away series against Zimbabwe. Suryakumar is placed second with 821 rating points behind Australia’s Travis Head, who has 844 rating points. Phil Salt of England is paced third with 797 points, ahead of Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (755), Mohammad Rizwan (746) and Jos Buttler (716). Gaikwad has gained 13 places to climb to the seventh spot in the rankings on the back of a stellar 77 not out off 47 balls in a comprehensive 100-run win for India in the second T20I against Zimbabwe.

With most of India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024-winning squad rested for the Zimbabwe tour, the five-game series has allowed India’s back-up players to showcase their talent, and with the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, the upcoming players can make a good case for a regular place in the side.

Apart from Gaikwad, Rinku Singh and Abhishek Sharma also made solid gains among the India batters. Rinku, who was among the reserves for the T20 World Cup, jumped four places to reach the 39th spot on the back of an attacking 48 not out from 22 balls in the second T20I.

And after a duck in the first game, all-rounder Abhishek smashed a stunning 100 from just 47 balls in the second game. With this spectacular knock, he entered the rankings for the first time at 75th spot.

Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett gained 25 places to finish at the 96th position courtesy of his two attacking cameos, making 22 off 15 and 26 off nine in the two matches. In the bowlers’ T20I chart, left-arm spinner Axar Patel dropped two places to be the lone Indian in top-10 at the ninth position with 644 rating points.

Fellow left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav also dropped three places to the 11th spot, while T20 World Cup’s player-of-the-tournament Jasprit Bumrah also slid two rungs to 14th position.

India vice-captain Hardik Pandya, meanwhile, dropped a place to the second position in the T20I all-rounders’ rankings. Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka moved to pole position. India’s Washington Sundar entered the top 50 on the back of his quickfire 27 in the first game, as well as his three wickets in two outings. Axar is placed 12th in the all-rounders’ rankings.

Let’s delve into the excitement of the game, highlight standout performances, and provide insightful analysis.

Axar Patel’s Spectacular Catch Dismisses Barry McCarthy

As the game progressed, India’s grip tightened on Ireland, with Axar Patel’s exceptional athleticism leaving the opposition stunned. Introduced into the attack by captain Rohit Sharma in the 12th over, Axar’s impact was immediate. With just two deliveries, he made his mark, luring Barry McCarthy into a flick shot towards the leg side. However, McCarthy’s attempt resulted in a top edge, sending the ball soaring towards the non-striker’s end. With remarkable agility, Axar Patel lunged forward, executing a full dive to clutch the catch with both hands, dismissing McCarthy without conceding any runs.

    Milestone Achievement for Axar Patel

This stunning catch also marked a significant milestone for Axar Patel, as it became his 50th wicket in T20 Internationals. Joining an elite group of Indian bowlers, including Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Jasprit Bumrah, Axar’s achievement underlined his prowess in the shortest format of the game.

Dominant Bowling Performance by India Against Ireland

Prior to Axar Patel’s heroics, India’s bowlers had set the tone for the match with a stellar performance. Opting to field first after winning the toss, Rohit Sharma’s decision proved prudent as left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh struck early, dismissing both Irish openers within the powerplay overs. Hardik Pandya then joined the onslaught, claiming crucial wickets alongside Jasprit Bumrah, as Ireland found themselves struggling at 36/4. Despite a brief resistance from Gareth Delany, who contributed a quickfire 26 off 14 balls, Ireland succumbed to the relentless pressure imposed by the Indian bowlers. Eventually, they were bundled out for a meager 96 runs in just 16 overs.
