    Choudhary said, “BJP welcomes the caste-based enumeration which was ordered by the state cabinet when there were 16 ministers from our party, including two deputy chief ministers.”

    The state president of BJP said, “Eighty percent of the figures that have come out are supporters of BJP.”

    Choudhary’s reference was to the survey showing majority Hindu community as 80 percent of the state’s total population, which is being linked to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s so-called “80 versus 20” statement.

    However, the Bihar BJP leader also claimed that many Extremely Backward Class (EBC) people like Dhanuk are complaining to him that their numbers have been shown less than estimated.

    He said, “We will try to know the methodology of the survey from the government.” We suspect that Nitish Kumar has worked under the pressure of Lalu Prasad, whose politics of appeasement is well known.

    Chaudhary said that if Nitish and Lalu really care about the MBCs then they should give up their hold on power and hand over the reins to the MBC people.

    According to the survey, the Muslim population of the state’s total population of 13.07 crore is 17.70 percent.

    Many RJD leaders say that according to the survey, the increase in Muslim population in percentage terms since the 2011 census has been less than one percent. This is contrary to BJP’s claims that the districts with open borders with Nepal and Bangladesh were undergoing demographic changes due to uncontrolled infiltration.

    The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Monday released the findings of its much-awaited caste survey ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections which revealed that OBCs and EBCs constitute 63 per cent of the state’s total population.

    According to the data, EBC (36 percent) has emerged as the largest social class followed by Other Backward Class population at 27.13 percent.

    The survey also said that the population of Yadav community falling under OBC group is the highest at 14.27 percent.

    Dalits, also known as Scheduled Castes, constitute 19.65 percent of the total population of the state, of which the Scheduled Tribe population is about 22 lakh (1.68 percent).

    People belonging to the “unreserved” category, which refers to the upper castes that dominated politics until the Mandal wave of the 1990s, constitute 15.52 percent of the total population.

    Bihar caste census case: complaint in Supreme Court on making data public

    The last time all castes in the country were enumerated was in 1931.

    The matter of making Bihar caste census data public has reached the Supreme Court. The petitioner has expressed objection to making the data public. It has been said in the complaint that how can the data be released while the hearing in this case is pending in the Supreme Court? A demand has been made for an early hearing in this matter in the Supreme Court. The court has decided that this case will be heard on October 6.

    The Supreme Court says that we cannot say anything on this matter right now. Actually, the Supreme Court is hearing petitions against caste enumeration. Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s bench is hearing this case. However, the bench had already refused to stay the calculation. Also, there was no restriction on making the data public. However, before this the Patna High Court had allowed caste enumeration, against which petitions were filed in the Supreme Court.

    Bihar’s Nitish Kumar government had ordered caste-based enumeration in the state last year after the Narendra Modi government at the Center made it clear that it would not count castes other than SCs and STs as part of the general census. Will be able to do it. The last census of all castes in the country was done in 1931. Along with giving approval to conduct caste based census on June 2 last year, the Bihar Cabinet had also allocated an amount of Rs 500 crore for it.
