The election dates announcement will mark the implementation of the Mode Code of Conduct for the polls. The Election Commission’s decision to announce the poll dates comes after holding extensive talks with political parties across India. The EC team visited several states including Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier this week, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the poll body will decide on holding Lok Sabha Elections and Assembly Elections together or separately in Jammu and Kashmir after reviewing the security situation. It’s likely that the poll body may announce the assembly dates for Jammu and Kashmir as well.

    2019 Poll Dates

In 2019, Lok Sabha elections were held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19 and the results were declared on May 23. The first phase of polls was held on April 11, the second on April 18, the third on April 23, the fourth on April 29, the fifth on May 6, the sixth on May 12 and the seventh on May 19. In 2019 polls, the BJP-led National Democratic (NDA) won a total of 303 seats, leaving the grand-old party behind at 52 seats.

    Campaign, Candidate List

Political parties have already started announcing candidate lists and their political campaign. While the BJP has released a list of 266 candidates so far, the Congress has announced 82 candidates. Other parties like Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Left have also announced several candidates for their respective states so far.

  • CID To Investigate POCSO Case Against Ex-Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa |

The Karnataka government on Friday announced the handover of the investigation of the case filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader BS Yediyurappa to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The order for this transfer was issued by the office of Karnataka’s Director General and Inspector General of Police, Alok Mohan.

The case was lodged at Bengaluru City Sadashivnagar Police Station, according to the provisions of POCSO 2012. The directive mandates the prompt handover of the case file to the CID for continuation of the investigation. The Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City, is instructed to personally deliver the case file, along with the relevant Investigating Officer, to the designated Investigation Officer in the CID, reported ANI.

    What Does The FIR Say?

BS Yediyurappa, the ex-Chief Minister of Karnataka and prominent BJP figure, is under investigation for an FIR concerning the purported sexual assault of a minor girl. According to the FIR lodged by a Bengaluru police station, the purported incident occurred on February 2nd in Bengaluru.

The complaint alleges that the victim was sexually harassed when she sought assistance on that day. She had sought help regarding another reported sexual assault incident. The FIR asserts that the senior BJP leader allegedly sexually assaulted the victim after forcibly taking her into a room. Following the incident, the victim informed her mother about the alleged assault. The FIR states that the victim claims to have been sexually harassed when seeking help regarding a previous incident in which she was allegedly raped by others.

Replying to the incident the BJP leader recounted that the woman, whom he had previously assisted, began speaking negatively about him. The 81-year-old seasoned politician narrated, “Recently, a distressed woman visited our residence. Upon inquiry, she disclosed some issues she was facing. I promptly contacted the police commissioner to address her concerns. However, afterward, she began levying accusations against me.”

  • Home Ministry Notifies CAA Rules; Minority Migrants Of These Countries To Get Indian Citizenship |

The Narendra Modi Government today announced the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 regulations. It was an integral part of the BJP’s 2019 manifesto. With this notification, the persecuted migrants beloging to minority communities will be able to get citizenship of India. Following the passage of the CAA by Parliament in December 2019 and its subsequent Presidential assent, significant protests erupted in various parts of the country after which the Modi government had put the implementation of the law in an abeyance. On December 27, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had asserted that the implementation of the CAA cannot be halted as it stands as the law of the land.

    What Is CAA?

The Citizenship Amendment Act aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants – including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians – who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014. The government has set up an online portal for allowing the migrants to apply for the citizenship. Applicants will need to disclose the year of their entry into India without any travel documents. No additional documentation will be required from the applicants.

    Enabling CAA Through District Magistrate

During the past two years, over 30 district magistrates and home secretaries across nine states have been authorized with the ability to confer Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians arriving from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan under the Citizenship Act of 1955. As per the Ministry of Home Affairs annual report for 2021-22, between April 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, a cumulative count of 1,414 individuals from non-Muslim minority communities originating from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan were granted Indian citizenship through registration or naturalization under the Citizenship Act, 1955.

West Bengal Government’s Stand On CAA

The Mamata Banerjee government has been opposed to the CAA. “If people are deprived of their rights under the rules, then we will fight against it. This is BJP’s publicity for elections, it is nothing else,” said Banerjee today. Banerjee also said that she won’t allow the government to implement the NRC as well. The Bengal CM added that everyone who live in Bengal are citizens of India.

  • BJP’s Saumitra Khan vs TMC’s Sujata Mondal: Bengal’s Bishnupur LS Seat To See Contest Between Former Couple |

New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC), the ruling party in West Bengal, has announced its candidates for all the 42 parliamentary seats in the state for the upcoming 2024 general elections. One of the most interesting contests is in the Bishnupur constituency, where the TMC has pitted Sujata Mondal against her former husband and the incumbent BJP MP, Saumitra Khan. The couple, who once campaigned together, are now bitter rivals in the political arena.

    How Couple Drifted Apart

Saumitra Khan and Sujata Mondal were married for several years, but their relationship soured due to ideological differences. According to sources, they had disagreements over political issues, which led to personal conflicts. Eventually, they decided to part ways and live separately. Their divorce was finalized in 2020, after which Sujata Mondal joined the TMC, leaving behind her husband and his party, the BJP.

    The Battle For Bishnupur

The BJP has re-nominated Saumitra Khan as its candidate from Bishnupur, a seat that he won in 2019 with a comfortable margin. However, he will face a tough challenge from his ex-wife, who has been given the ticket by the TMC. In the 2019 elections, Sujata Mondal had supported her husband and canvassed for him door to door. But now, she will be seeking votes for herself and trying to defeat him. The irony is that the two will be campaigning against each other on the same turf.

    Sujata Mondal’s Rise In TMC

Sujata Mondal, who was known as Saumitra Khan’s wife in politics, has carved a niche for herself in the TMC. She joined the party in 2020 and was soon given a ticket to contest the assembly elections from Arambagh. She lost the election, but not before accusing the BJP workers of attacking her with bricks and stones. She also courted controversy by making a derogatory remark about the scheduled caste community.

Despite these setbacks, she rose in the ranks of the TMC and became the chief executive of the Bankura district council. She has now been entrusted with the responsibility of taking on her former husband in the Lok Sabha elections.

  • Mamata Banerjee To Hold Mega Public Rally, Announce First List Of TMC Candidates For L S Polls |

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, under attack from the BJP over recent incident of Sandeshkhali, is all set to address a massive rally in Kolkata’ Brigade Ground. The rally, where thousands of people gathered in support of the TMC, is also a show of strength by the fiery leader. During the rally, Banerjee is also likely to announce TMC’s first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This is the first time the party is declaring it list of candidates during a public meeting and the move can be perceived as Banerjee’s open challenge to the BJP and Congress.

The central focus of the rally is around the claimed retention of the state’s financial dues by the central government, a contentious matter that has been an important issue in state politics over the last two years.

    TMC’s First List Today

According to the Trinamool Congress, CM Banerjee will declare the party’s nominees for all 42 parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal. Visuals from the Brigade Ground showed a massive crowd at the rally where Abhishek Banerjee was also present. The TMC has already made it clear that it won’t form an alliance with the Congress or CPI, leaving the INDIA bloc’s Bengal aspirations in a lurch.

    One Of A Kind Rally

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee announced the rally named ‘Jana Garjan Sabha,’ from his ‘X’ handle. This is a one of a kind gathering featuring three platforms, including a cross ramp, making it viable for the speakers to reach closer to the public, while walking on the ramp. Mamata and Abhishek are among the primary speakers for the TMC.

Politics Over Years At Brigade Parade Ground

This marks the party’s inaugural large-scale gathering at the ground since the opposition meeting in January 2019, where leaders from 19 opposition parties were gathered united in a show of solidarity. Despite the TMC’s grassroots organisation, its seat count decreased from 34 to 22 in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while the BJP performed strongly, securing 18 seats in the state.

Since the 2021 assembly polls, the ruling party in the state has witnessed eight MLAs and two MPs switching sides to join the TMC.

  • AAP Launches Lok Sabha Poll Campaign; Arvind Kejriwal Accuses BJP Of Stalling Delhi Govt Schemes |

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann today launched the AAP’s Lok Sabha poll campaign from the national capital. Unveiling the campaign, the AAP gave the slogan ‘Sansad mein bhi Kejriwal, tabhi Dilli hogi aur khush haal’ (Delhi can be more prosperous only if there is Kejriwal in Parliament). The Aam Aadmi Party’s poll campaign for the Lok Sabha elections comes after the party sealed a seat-sharing deal with the Congress. As per the seat-sharing deal, the AAP will contest 4 seats and the Congress 3 in Delhi.

Addressing the media, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said that the AAP government is fighting against the BJP and the central agencies. He said that the BJP through the Delhi LG tried to stop all welfare schemes of the AAP government but none of the seven MPs raised a voice against it. “Identify those who are stopping your work and the development of Delhi, and punish them for their wrongdoings this time. Give your blessings this time to your son who always takes care of your family and always protects you from these people,” appealed Kejriwal to the voters.

https://t.co/6fC6RQR7Np
    — Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) March 8, 2024

Delhi and Punjab are ruled by AAP and these are the only two states that have free electricity supply, he said. “They hate you because you elected and brought an ordinary man to power in Delhi. They demolished Mohalla Clinics with bulldozers, they stopped door-to-door ration delivery scheme, tests and medicines in hospitals,” said Kejriwal.

The AAP will fight the general election in collaboration with INDIA bloc partner Congress under a seat-sharing arrangement it has struck with it in Delhi, Gujarat, and Haryana. In Punjab, however, both parties have decided to contest the Lok Sabha polls independently.

The AAP has also received two constituencies – Bharuch, Jamnagar – in Gujarat and Kurukshetra in Haryana under the seat-sharing deal with Congress. Separately, AAP has also declared its candidates from Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Sonitpur Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam.

  • Ahead Of PM Modi’s Kashmir Visit, MARCOS Commandos, Snipers Turn Srinagar Into Fortress |

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir’s Capital Srinagar has become a fortress as stringent security arrangements have been put in place to ensure an incident-free visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. The city has been declared as a “Temporary Red Zone” for the operation of drones and quadcopters, as per the Drone Rules, 2021. Anyone violating the rules will face legal action, the Srinagar Police said. Marine Commandos (MARCOS), CRPF, J&K police and snipers have been also deployed in Srinagar.

Prime Minister Modi will address a public rally at Bakshi Stadium, which has been drapped in tricolors. He will also unveil development projects worth over Rs 6,400 crore for the union territory. PM Modi will also participate in the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu Kashmir’ programme and dedicate to nation about Rs 5000 crore worth programme for boosting agri-economy in Jammu and Kashmir.

    High Alert In Srinagar

Security forces have been deployed in large numbers along the routes that the prime minister will take during his stay in Srinagar. Barricades have been set up at many places to restrict the movement of the people during his visit, the officials said.

Surveillance devices such as drones and CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor the situation. Security forces have also intensified foot patrolling in a two-kilometre radius around the rally venue.

Marine commandos (MARCOS) have been stationed in Jhelum river and Dal Lake to thwart any possible attacks from these water bodies, the officials said.

Political Significance Of PM Modi’s Visit

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the valley, his first after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, has a political significance as well. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching and the opposition parties demanding the restoration of statehood and assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, the prime minister’s speech may address these issues.

The Centre had scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 on August 5, 2019 and split the former state into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Several schools in Srinagar have been shut for Wednesday and Thursday due to the prime minister’s visit. Board exams scheduled for Thursday have also been postponed till next month.

The prime minister will also launch tourism-related projects worth more than Rs 1,400 crore under the ‘Swadesh Darshan’ and ‘PRASHAD’ schemes, including a project for the integrated development of the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar.
