  • Demand to extend the date of 2nd phase voting in Chhattisgarh, appeal of Raman Singh and AAP

    BJP leader Raman Singh has demanded to extend the date of voting for the second phase of Chhattisgarh assembly elections. Raman Singh on Wednesday urged the Election Commission to advance the date of voting for the second phase of elections to be held on November 17 in view of the Chhath Puja festival.   • Chhattisgarh government withdrew petition from Supreme Court in money laundering case, challenged ED’s action

    The Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday withdrew its petition from the Supreme Court challenging the Enforcement Directorate’s action against state government officials in a money laundering case on jurisdictional grounds. The money laundering case registered in 2022 pertains to an FIR lodged on a complaint by the Income Tax Department over allegations of illegal duty collection on coal in Chhattisgarh and attempts to influence public servants through corrupt means.

    The ED has claimed that a major scam took place in coal transportation in Chhattisgarh between 2019 and 2021, under which a nexus of politicians, officials and others were allegedly charging illegal fees. The Chhattisgarh government, in its petition, claimed that the ED had initiated investigation against the state government officials by filing an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in Raipur on September 29, 2022, based on the FIR lodged in Bengaluru.

    Chhattisgarh’s standing counsel Sumir Sodhi on Wednesday told a bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice SVN Bhatti that he has been directed to withdraw the petition. The bench allowed the state government to withdraw the petition and recorded Sodhi’s plea. The petition requested the court to declare the ED’s action illegal, ultra vires and unconstitutional.

    Apart from seeking quashing of the ECIR, the Chhattisgarh government also urged the top court to declare all subsequent actions taken by the ED in connection with the investigation as arbitrary and unconstitutional as they have interfered with the functions of the state police. . The Chhattisgarh government alleged that the ED investigation resulted in indiscriminate surveys and raids in various departments and offices of the state government and arrests of state officials.

  • BSP and Gondwana Gantantra Party will contest elections together in Chhattisgarh, who will contest on how many seats?

BSP had contested the 2018 assembly elections in alliance with Janata Congress Chhattisgarh-J (JCC-J) and Communist Party of India (CPI).

    BSP had contested 35 seats in 2018 and won from Jaijapur and Pamgarh constituencies in Janjgir-Champa district. The deposits of the party’s candidates on 28 seats were forfeited. BSP’s ally JCC(J) had got five seats.

    BSP got 3.87 percent votes in the elections. GGP had contested 38 seats in 2018 and did not get even a single seat. The deposits of the party’s candidates on 36 seats were forfeited. In the last election, GGP got 1.73 percent votes.

    BSP has a lot of influence in the Scheduled Caste dominated areas living in the plains of Chhattisgarh. At the same time, GGP got support in some tribal dominated parts of Bilaspur and Surguja region. According to political analysts, the alliance of BSP and GGP can make a dent in the vote bank of the ruling party Congress.

The yatra will culminate in Bilaspur on the same day after covering a distance of 2,989 km across 87 assembly constituencies (out of total 90).

    Arun Sao said that Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the closing ceremony. Bijapur, Sukma and Antagarh constituencies (all Maoist affected) have not been included in the yatra, but people belonging to these constituencies will join the yatra when it passes through nearby constituencies.

    Senior leaders from the Center and Chhattisgarh will participate in the yatras. It is noteworthy that BJP had lost to Congress in the 2018 assembly elections after being in power in the state for 15 years. Congress had won 68 seats and BJP had won 15 seats. Last month, BJP had released its first list of candidates for 21 seats. However, the Election Commission has not yet announced the schedule for the assembly elections to be held later this year.
