  • Man Nabbed For Preying On Co-Passengers’ Jewellery, Valuables; Took 200 Flights In A Year |

    New Delhi: The Delhi Police arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly stealing valuables from co-passengers on flights. According to the police, the accused, named Rajesh Kapoor, boarded over 200 flights and travelled for at least 110 days in the past year to steal inflight. 

    The Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI), Usha Rangnani, informed a press conference at the IGI airport that he was arrested in Paharganj, where he kept the stolen jewellery. She added that police had arrested another ally of Kapoor, Sharad Jain (46), to whom he was planning to sell the stolen items. 

    After two separate cases were reported from two separate flights in the last three months, the authorities formed a probe team to investigate the matter, DCP told the press conference. 

    Targeted Elders, Vulnerable Passengers 

    Of all 11 cases he was involved in five were at the airport. As per a report by PTI, the thief used to target elderly passengers based on their tendency to keep their valuables in their handbags. He would target vulnerable passengers on domestic flights, particularly Air India and Vistara. 

    He used the chaos amid boarding a flight to his advantage and would secretly snoop through the overhead cabin on the flights.

    After setting the target on an individual he used to exchange the seat from the airline, to seat close to his prey. Sometimes, he carefully timed his operation with the distractions, thus making him successful in robbery. 

    As per the report by PTI, the police officer said that Kapoor is named in 11 theft cases including gambling and criminal breach of trust. 

    To avoid being detected further, he employed a strategy, he used to buy tickets in the name of his late brother, aiming to conceal his identity from both airlines and law enforcement authorities.

Police said that most of the complainants in this case are from Kerala state. According to Delhi Police, this gang has so far defrauded around 1000 people by promising them jobs by sending them to Dubai.

    Giving information on this matter, CP Ravindra Yadav of Delhi Special Crime Branch said that these people used to open a front office in a good place like Vasant Kunj, Mahipalpur or Dwarka. Also, from platforms like Naukri.com, they were extracting data of people who had to work in Gulf countries. Those who believed him and answered his calls, he would call them with the promise of getting a job in Dubai and extort around Rs 60 thousand from each victim.

    Used to take people into confidence by getting tourist visas

    Police have also told that this gang first took the person into confidence by getting him a tourist visa and then after reaching Dubai, they used to take huge amount in installments by promising to get a work permit. Besides, information has also been received that their victims were mostly people from Kerala and South India. Who wanted to earn more money by going to Gulf country.

    According to the police, the accused have been identified as Inam-ul-Haq Ansari (32), Tabish Hashmi (26), Mohammad Tabrez Alam (26), Tariq Shams (26), Ekram Muzaffar (19), Shankar Kumar Shah (28) and Somraj. (26) Crime Branch Special Commissioner Ravindra Singh Yadav said, “These swindlers used to call the victims on behalf of different companies. He had registered these companies on the basis of fake documents. These people used to lure the victims by sending emails and calling, saying that the information uploaded by them was suitable for a job in a Gulf country.”

    They used to demand money in the name of medical examination, documentation and consultation fees. Police said that after duping more than 100 people, they used to close their fake companies and later vacate the offices. During investigation, police arrested Ansari from Zakir Nagar. The Special Commissioner said that later his associates were also arrested. Police said that eight laptops, 12 mobile phones, 110 passports, bill books, letterheads of various fake companies, nine stamp pads, two QR code scanners, 11 check books and two passbooks of different banks were recovered from the accused.

    Lokesh Shriwas is accused of theft of jewelery worth around Rs 20 crore from a jewelery shop in New Delhi and involvement in several thefts in Bilaspur city, officials said. Civil Lines police station in-charge Pradeep Arya said that the accused Shrivas, arrested on Friday last week, was presented in the court on Tuesday. Accused Shriwas was in police custody in Bilaspur till October 3.

    Arya said that the court has granted three-day transit remand for accused Shrivas to Delhi Police. The court, while giving a memorandum to Delhi Police, said that after three days of transit remand, within the next seven days, Delhi Police will complete its investigation and present the accused Shrivas in Bilaspur. Bilaspur, Delhi, Durg and Raipur police took joint action and arrested Shriwas from Durg district on Friday.

    Gold and diamond jewelery worth about Rs 12 crore and Rs 12 lakh 50 thousand in cash were recovered from the possession of Lokesh Shriwas. Earlier, the police had arrested Shrivas’s associate Shiva Chandravanshi from Kawardha city on Thursday. Police had recovered gold and silver jewellery, vehicles and goods worth Rs 23 lakh from Chandravanshi. Chandravanshi was sent to judicial custody on Friday.

    Police officials said that Shrivas is also accused of theft of Rs 20 crore from a jewelery shop in Bhogal area of ​​Delhi. According to Delhi Police, this theft is one of the biggest thefts in the national capital.

    Police officials said that at the beginning of the week, the accused broke into the strong room of a shop named Umrao Singh Jewelers and escaped with jewelery worth more than Rs 20 crore and Rs 5 lakh in cash. Several CCTV cameras were installed in the shop but they were damaged on Sunday night. The shop owner had closed the shop at around 8 pm on Sunday night. He came to know about the incident when he opened his shop around 10.30 am on Tuesday. The shop remains closed on Monday.

    Master thief Lokesh Umrao Singh entered the jewelers showroom late on the night of 24th September (Sunday). The next day, on 25th September, he came out late in the evening with gold, silver and diamonds from the shop and caught a bus from Delhi to Madhya Pradesh at 9 pm. That means Lokesh spent 18 hours inside the showroom. In this time he had lost goods worth Rs 25 crore.

    Master thief Lokesh has been to jail many times before. A police officer who investigated his case had told that he carried out the theft incidents alone. Even in Delhi, he had gone alone to the showroom to steal. DCP said that before going inside the shop, he had purchased a disc cutter machine from GB Road for Rs 1300. That is, he entered the showroom with goods worth a total of Rs 1400. He stole for a total of 18 hours and when he came out, he was a millionaire. His bag contained goods worth not just one-two crores but Rs 25 crores.
