Licensing will not be implemented for import of computers and laptops in the country. However, shipments of these devices will be monitored. Earlier in August, the central government had announced the implementation of the license requirement for import of certain products including computers, laptops and tablets from November 1. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal told reporters, “We believe that there are no such restrictions on laptops. We are only saying that the import of laptops should be monitored. We are only monitoring. There are no such restrictions. Are not.” In this regard, the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said that there will be an import management system for this. It will be implemented from November 1. The regulation of IT hardware industry is with MeitY. DGFT notifies decisions related to import or export of any product. However, the IT hardware industry has expressed apprehensions regarding this. An industry source said, “It will be like an import management system in which an authorization will be issued to people. It is a type of licensing.” In this, companies will have to request for a specific number of imports and they will get authorization for import. Samsung, one of the big consumer electronics companies, has prepared to increase manufacturing in the country. The company’s smartphones are already being produced in the country. Samsung also plans to manufacture laptops at its factory in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. This will give a boost to the Make in India scheme of the Central Government. Strictness increased on Ola and Uber, bike taxis will be confiscated
Companies like Ola and Uber, which provide bike taxi services through apps, may face difficulties if they continue this service in the capital. Delhi government has said that if these companies do not follow the court order banning bike tax, then their bike taxis will be confiscated. The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Delhi government’s ban on bike taxis. This was a shock to Uber who had appealed to the court to continue this service. The Delhi government had argued in the court that bike taxis violate city laws as they do not have a license for this service. Uber said that due to this ban, its riders will lose their livelihood. Ashish Kundra, principal secretary and transport commissioner of the Delhi government, told Reuters that these companies should focus on the safety of passengers instead of chasing profits. He said, “We will issue an advisory to these companies asking them to comply with the court order. If they do not do so, we will start seizing the vehicles.” Uber and Ola did not respond to requests for comment. Both these companies were offering bike taxi service through their apps on Tuesday also. Biggest decline in global sales of personal computers in two decades
Global personal computer (PC) sales have declined the most in the last two decades in the September quarter. Shipments of desktops and laptops declined by about 19.5 percent year-on-year to about 68 million units. This is the fourth consecutive quarter of decline in PC shipments. The report of market research firm Gartner states that due to people returning to office and reopening of schools, the demand for PC has reduced in both consumer and enterprise segments. “Excessive inventory has become a major problem due to weak demand for PCs in both consumer and enterprise segments as supply chain disruptions ease,” said Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa. Many consumers had purchased new personal computers in the last two years and hence demand in this segment is weak. Due to tensions between some countries and weak economic conditions, companies have reduced their spending on IT and PCs are not their priority. Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) witnessed the biggest decline of 26.4 percent in the September quarter. This is the third consecutive quarter of decline in sales in this region. Weak economic conditions in Europe and the war between Ukraine and Russia are impacting demand. Gartner says that many PC vendors in Russia closed their businesses in the first two quarters of this year. This has had a negative impact on total shipments and is visible in comparison on a year-on-year basis. PC sales in Asia Pacific have declined by 16.6 percent on a year-on-year basis. The main reason for this is the lockdown due to the epidemic in many cities of China. This has slowed down the business of companies and reduced the demand for personal computers in consumer, government and enterprise segments. Dell ranked first in the PC market in terms of total PC shipments. Its market share was 26.8 percent. It was followed by HP (about 23.2 percent), Apple (16 percent) and Lenovo (about 15.8 percent). Dell’s laptop shipments have declined in all regions except Japan. However, its desktop shipments have increased on a year-on-year basis in all regions except Asia Pacific. -
