  • Layoffs: Sundar Pichai-Led Company Google Reportedly Fires Entire Python Team; Know Why? |

    New Delhi: Sundar Pichai-led company Google has laid off the entire team of Python. The company also reduced employees working on different technologies including Flutter, Dart, and others. The decision has been taken to reduce costs by hiring less expensive labour outside the United States, as per reports. 

    The tech giant Google is likely to set up a new team in Germany’s Munich, that would act as “cheaper” labour reportedly. 

    The small US Python team used to manage most parts of Google’s Python ecosystem. The team used to maintain the stability of Python at Google, updated with thousands of third-party packages, and developed a type-checker.     Google spokesperson Alex Garcia-Kummert told TechCrunch which states that “As we’ve said, we’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead”.  Adding further, he mentions that “To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023 and into 2024, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, remove layers, and align their resources to their biggest product priorities”.

    According to Business Insider reports, Google has also reduced the staff from its real estate and finance departments. Google’s finance chief Ruth Porat has given a reason behind layoffs and tells employees in an email that the restructuring includes expanding growth to Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin.

The restructuring aims to create more localized Creator management teams, centralize other functions, and divide support teams into Creator-facing and end-user segments.

    The goal is to enhance scalability for international growth and address the platform’s slowdown in ad revenue.     Support teams are also undergoing a division into Creator-facing and end-user segments. These moves are part of an effort to streamline operations and achieve better scalability for international growth.

    Amid these structural changes, YouTube has emphasized that Creators will not lose support. The platform is reorganizing its teams to ensure dedicated and effective support for Creators, aligning with the evolving needs of the platform and its users.

    Addressing Ad Revenue Challenges

    YouTube’s restructuring comes in response to challenges in ad revenue over the past year. The platform has faced a slowdown, prompting measures such as cracking down on ad blockers and encouraging users to engage with ads.

    Additionally, YouTube has explored alternative revenue streams, including subscription-based models such as YouTube Premium.

    The recent layoffs at YouTube are part of a broader trend within Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Last week, Google announced layoffs affecting various sectors, including hardware, Assistant, engineering, and ads. The ongoing structural changes within Alphabet indicate a shift in organizational strategies and operations.

    New Delhi: One year after Google’s massive layoffs, CEO Sundar Pichai has offered a candid reflection on the decision, acknowledging its impact on employees and hinting at potential regrets. Facing a looming recession in early 2023, Google made the difficult choice to cut 12,000 jobs.

    Now, a year later, Pichai addressed the issue at an internal all-hands meeting. Responding to an employee’s question about the layoffs’ impact on growth, profit, and morale, Pichai admitted the company could have handled things differently.     “This is difficult for any company to go through,” Pichai said, acknowledging the unprecedented nature of the situation. “It became clear if we didn’t act, it would have been a worse decision down the line.” He argued that inaction could have hindered Google’s ability to invest in critical areas during a challenging economic climate.

    However, Pichai acknowledged the layoffs’ negative consequences. He conceded, “Clearly it’s not the right way to do it. I think it’s something we could have done differently for sure.”

    The layoffs impacted various teams across the company, including recruiting, corporate functions, and even some engineering and product groups. The cuts affected Google’s global workforce, with immediate implementation for US staff.

    Pichai also addressed the issue of employee morale, noting the “clear big impact” reflected in internal feedback channels like Googlegeist. He acknowledged the significant emotional toll the layoffs took on many employees.

    Teams throughout the organization are impacted by the job layoffs, including those in charge of recruiting, certain corporate tasks, and several engineering and product teams.  According to Google, the layoffs affect US employees immediately and are widespread.
