The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a pressure area has developed over the south-east and south-west Arabian Sea, which is likely to turn into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 21.
This will be the second cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea this year. According to the formula adopted for naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean region, it will be called ‘Tej’. According to IMD, the cyclonic storm is predicted to turn into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday and move towards the southern coasts of Oman and nearby Yemen.
However, meteorologists have warned that sometimes storms can deviate from the predicted path, as was seen in the case of Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’. ‘Biparjoy’ formed in the Arabian Sea in June and after initially moving in a north-westerly direction, passed towards Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan.
The IMD said the low pressure system formed at 11:30 a.m. Friday about 900 km east-southeast of Socotra (Yemen), 1,170 km east-southeast of Salalah Airport (Oman) and 1,260 km east-southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). I was focused. Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting agency, said that most models indicate that the storm is moving towards the Yemen-Oman coast.
However, global forecast system models suggest its recursion over the deep central parts of the Arabian Sea, allowing the system to move towards the Pakistan and Gujarat coast. During a cyclonic storm, the wind speed is 62-88 km per hour, whereas when the wind speed reaches 89-117 km per hour, it is called a severe cyclonic storm.
The IMD also said that the low pressure area over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal may turn into a deep depression over west-central Bay of Bengal around October 22. This system is expected to move towards west-northwest by Sunday morning. After this, it is predicted to move north-north-east towards the Bangladesh coast.
