  • 'I Don't Think Rohit Sharma Was Superior As Captain,' Ex-England Cricketer Takes Swipe At Indian Skipper Post Series Win Against England | cricket news

Former England spinner Graeme Swann doesn't believe Rohit Sharma's captaincy was better than Ben Stokes' in the five-match Test series. Rather, it was a lethal set of bowlers that “did the trick” for the India skipper. While Stokes' leadership style has attracted all the attention prior to and during the series, Rohit's team emerged 4-1 winners in the end.

“I don't think he has been superior as a captain because his bowlers have done the trick for him. I think he's got more weapons at his armoury,” Swann told PTI Videos in an exclusive chat after India inflicted an innings and 64- run defeat on England in the fifth and final Test on Saturday. “He's been good don't get me wrong, Rohit Sharma, but, I don't think if you pick this apart and say Stokes has captained badly, I think you are barking up the wrong tree there. Rohit Sharma's bowlers have really come to town for him, come to the party for him, in the last four Test matches, they didn't in the first one but they have done for the last four,” Swann noted.

    No blaming Baseball

Far from blaming 'Bazball' for England's loss, Swann said Stokes and Co actually failed to play the brand of cricket that has brought them success in recent times. Swann's observation is in stark contrast to the views expressed by few other former players who attributed the drubbing to the visitors' fixation with Bazball.

“I don't think we have seen Bazball in this trip whatsoever, we saw it for one innings of this Test series, that's when Ollie Pope got a 190, and that was the definition of bazball,” he said. (Team India Back On Top Of ICC Test Team Rankings After 4-1 Win Over England)

“I think England, where they have fallen flat in this series is, they have not been brave enough. I don't think they have played what you guys in the media call Bazball. I think if they had, I think this series would have been closer if I'm honest.”

Bazball, which is derived from England Test coach Brendon McCullum's nickname Baz, fell flat as the tourists capitulated inside three days in the fifth Test, helping India secure their 17th straight Test series triumph on home soil. On the match getting over in under three days, Swann said: “I would say it's a very good advertisement for Test cricket, because it was an exciting match.

“India were just too good for England in this game. It's always at the end of a series if it's already been won by one team, you worry that this will happen, the resistance will be completely blown away and it was in this Test match. So England will have to go home and shake themselves off wondering where it went so badly wrong. India are world class especially their bowling attack, and that was really shown again in this Test match.”

As a former off-spinner himself, Swann applauded Ravichandran Ashwin's stupendous performance on his 100 Test match. (Rohit Sharma Makes Big Statement On His Retirement, Says 'I Feel In Last 2 Or 3 Years…')

“You know what it's brilliant, to get a fifer on his hundredth Test match. I have not actually seen him, I was looking to go and congratulate him myself but I will have to do that at the hotel later.”Bowling so well and making those early inroads, that was brilliant, possibly one of his best fivers in his 100 Test matches, so you have got to take your hat off to Ashwin,” he observed.

On James Anderson becoming the first fast bowler to reach 700 wickets, Swann said: “He's a joke, Jimmy is an absolute joke, how he has kept going for all this amount of time. When I say it's a joke I mean that in a good way, he's been incredible, and to get 700 wickets, well you know it's almost nonsensical the achievement and I love him to bits. I was kind of hoping when he almost bounced Kuldeep out, almost hit his gloves and bobbled in the air, that would have been the dream for Jimmy, because he has not bowled a decent bouncer for 10 years, but he has now.”

Indian cricket fans are holding their breath as news emerges of Shreyas Iyer’s injury, potentially sidelining him for the crucial upcoming Test matches against England, according to Indian Express sources. Indian Express’ source said, “Iyer has informed the Indian team management and the medical staff that his back gets stiff after playing more than 30 balls and he feels pain in his groin while playing forward defence. Post surgery, he is facing this issue for the first time so he has been advised to rest for a few weeks. He will head to NCA later.”

    The Injury Woes

Iyer’s troubles surfaced during his innings, where he experienced discomfort while executing forward defensive shots. Sources reveal that the equipment mix-up further compounded his situation, hinting at potential setbacks in his recovery.

    Road to Recovery

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is set to deliberate on Friday regarding the team composition for the upcoming matches. Iyer’s condition will likely necessitate further evaluation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. However, the batsman remains optimistic about returning to action ahead of the Indian Premier League.

    Selection Conundrum

Should Iyer be unable to participate, the selection committee faces a crucial decision in finding his replacement. With KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja poised for a comeback, the likes of Rajat Patidar may also be considered for a spot in the lineup.

    Virat Kohli’s Uncertain Status

Compounding the team’s concerns is the uncertainty surrounding former captain Virat Kohli’s availability. Despite withdrawing from the series due to personal reasons, selectors await confirmation regarding his participation in the final two Tests.

    Preparations Amidst Uncertainty

As the squad regroups in Rajkot, scheduled training sessions aim to maintain focus and readiness amid the ongoing uncertainty. The team management remains vigilant, ensuring adequate rest and recuperation for players nursing injuries.

  • Big Blow For Team India As Virat Kohli Likely To Extend Leave: Report | cricket news

In a setback for the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli’s absence from the ongoing England series is set to be prolonged, with the prolific batsman expected to sit out the third and fourth Tests in Rajkot and Ranchi, respectively. According to ESPN Cricinfo’s sources, uncertainties also loom over Kohli’s participation in the fifth Test in Dharmasala, commencing from March 6, a concern that selectors will deliberate upon during their upcoming meeting to finalize the squad for the final leg of the series.

Kohli, who initially withdrew from the first two Tests citing “personal reasons,” continues to remain unavailable. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) disclosed Kohli’s decision just days before the series opener on January 22. Since then, no further updates have been provided by the board regarding his absence. BCCI’s statement read, “Virat has spoken to Captain Rohit Sharma, the team management and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention.”

While Kohli’s prolonged absence poses a challenge for India, there’s a glimmer of hope with KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja on the path to recovery. Both players missed the second Test in Vizag due to injury concerns but are reportedly progressing well with their rehabilitation.

Virat Kohli and his wife, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their second child. The joyous news was indirectly confirmed by former South African cricketer AB de Villiers, shedding light on Kohli’s recent absence from the cricketing arena.

De Villiers, in a candid interview, shared insights into his communication with Kohli, where the Indian skipper expressed the need to prioritize his family during this crucial period. Confirming the speculations surrounding Kohli’s paternity leave, De Villiers stated, “Yes, his second child is on the way. Yes, it’s family time and things are important to him.”

The couple’s decision to expand their family has stirred excitement among fans, who have been eagerly awaiting news of a ‘junior Kohli.’ Kohli’s dedication to being with his family during this special time reflects his commitment to his loved ones and underscores the significance of family in his life.

While Kohli and Sharma have yet to make an official announcement regarding their imposing bundle of joy, the outpouring of support and well-wishes from fans and well-wishers alike highlights the couple’s cherished place in the hearts of millions.

  • Virat Kohli’s Replacement For First Two Tests Vs ENG: Sarfaraz Khan And Rajat Patidar In Contention – Report | cricket news

India’s key batsman, Virat Kohli, has withdrawn from participation in the initial two Tests against England citing personal reasons that necessitate his immediate and exclusive focus, as stated by the BCCI on Monday. The cricket board has appealed to both fans and media to avoid speculating about the precise cause for his compelled absence before the commencement of the five-match series scheduled to kick off in Hyderabad on January 25. The Board has assured that a replacement for the prominent batter will be announced soon.

“Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming IDFC First Bank Test series against England, citing personal reasons,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

The BCCI also said that Kohli has discussed his decision with skipper Rohit Sharma and the team management. (Shoaib Malik’s Bride Sana Javed Shares New Wedding Photo On Internet, Check Pic Here)

“Virat has spoken to captain Rohit Sharma, the team management and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention,” the release further stated.

Shah also said that BCCI completely backs its star player and has faith in the team and its ability to get results even without its best batsman. (Virat Kohli To Miss First 2 Tests Vs England Due To Personal Reasons, BCCI Requests Fans To Respect His Privacy)

“The BCCI respects his decision and the Board and team management has extended its support to the star batsman and is confident in the abilities of the remaining squad members to step up and deliver commendable performances in the Test series,” the secretary said. He also urged everyone to respect Kohli’s privacy.

“The BCCI requests the media and fans to respect Virat Kohli’s privacy during this time and refrain from speculating on the nature of his personal reasons.

“The focus should remain on supporting the Indian cricket team as they embark on the upcoming challenges in the Test series,” Shah said.

It has been learned that both Shah and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar were kept in loop about the possibility of Kohli needing a break at some point during the England series. Recently, Kohli also skipped the first T20I game against Afghanistan due to “personal reasons”.

Before that, he had taken a short break, again for personal reasons, during India’s tour of South Africa where he missed an intra-squad practice game and flew to London, within days after arriving in South Africa. The last time he took a break, which was not linked to any injury, during a Test series was a paternity leave in 2021 when his daughter Vamika was born. He only played the first Test of that series.

Rajat Patidar vs Sarfaraz Khan as replacement

It is understood that one among the two heavyweight India ‘A’ performers — Rajat Patidar of Madhya Pradesh and Sarfaraz Khan of Mumbai — are frontrunners to replace Kohli.

Patidar recently scored 151 against the England Lions in an unofficial Test and Sarfaraz scored a half-ton in the second innings of the same game. There is talk of including veteran Cheteshwar Pujara in the line-up considering his experience of 20,000 plus first-class runs, including 7000 in Tests.

However, it will be interesting if the current selection committee under Agarkar is ready to look back or move forward. The batting line-up for first Test will comprise Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, and KS Bharat (wk).
