  • Floods and landslides kill 60 people in Nepal. world news

    At least 60 people have died as incessant rainfall batters all across Nepal. The government has deployed more than 20,000 security personnel for the search and rescue operation.

    The Kathmandu Valley, comprising Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur alone, recorded 34 deaths in a single day due to water logging and landslides on the slopes. Five different districts of Bagmati Province recorded an additional 19 deaths, while Koshi Province recorded 7 deaths in the past 24 hours.

    As per the police, dozens of others are missing across the country, with the rescue operation ongoing with deployment of choppers, motorboats and other possible means.

    “In Kathmandu, 11 people are recorded dead while Lalitpur reported 18 and Bhaktapur reported 5 deaths within 24 hours,” SSP Binod Ghimire from Kathmandu Valley Police Office confirmed ANI.

    The security agencies- Nepal Army, Armed Police Force (APF) and the Nepal Police rescued 1415 people from various locations of valley.

    Nepal Army and Armed Police Force (APF) personnel used the zip-line rescue and long-line rescue techniques to bring stranded people to safer place.

    Nepal’s Koshi province CM Hikmat Kumar Karki visited Koshi barrage in Supaul to review the rising water level situation.

    “Last evening, we had our dinner at around 8 PM (NST) and slept off. The water started entering our garage after 10:30 PM (NST), few of my friends managed to escape the flash flood and reached to a safer ground. The flood engulfed the area and swept others and we climbed to the top of the bus, the flood eventually swept 5 to 7 vehicles, and other parts of the vehicle. Staying on the top of the vehicle since last night, we are now rescued in the afternoon by the security forces,” Jitendra Mandal, one of the rescued workers from a garage engulfed by Nakkhu River told ANI after arriving at the shelter.

    A total of 75 workers were in the garage built on the embankments of the Nakkhu River in Kusunti of Lalitpur. Security personnel working for hours were able to rescue them using zip-line rescue who are now kept in a school and will be relocated to the safer place later.

    Jitendra Mandal, rescued worker in Lalitpur, said, “We were slowly losing our hopes. We thought it’s our last day because the other buses were also gradually being washed away.”

    Recalling the ordeal, he said, “The overflowing Nakkhu River burst its embankment trapping dozens of families. A Nepal Army chopper was also called in to rescue workers from an under construction building using the long-line rescue method, only a few meters far from the site where Mandal along with his friends were rescued on Saturday afternoon.”

    Asked about the total number of people who have been rescued so far, Mukesh Sharaff, one of the rescued workers who managed to escape early, said, “We were a total of 75 people in the garage.” He said, “Till afternoon about 15 of them are there and are being rescued. Rest of them has already been rescued.”

    Influenced by water vapor from the Bay of Bengal and a low-pressure system in the region, Nepal since Thursday evening had been witnessing heavy downpours. The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA) also issued warning for 56 out of 77 districts about possible disasters advising people to exercise caution.

    As of Saturday evening, floods, landslides, inundation and erosion have caused damage in 44 districts across the country, as per the Police. Among them, various road sections of 39 districts have been completely blocked.

    As the rain battered the bowl-shaped valley overflowing the rivers, people faced problems in continuing with their day-to-day routine works.

    Speaking to ANI, Ram Prasad Ghimire, resident, said, “The spontaneous rainfall in the last two days has impacted people living along the river banks or the river sides of Kathmandu valley. The residential areas within the Kathmandu Valley which lacks proper drainage systems is facing the problem of inundation. I had to travel to altogether four places of Kathmandu but could not reach one of them and was forced to return home.”

    Home to the world’s nine of the ten highest peaks in the world, Nepal this year already had estimated more rain than average and 1.8 million people will be affected by it. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) also had estimated 412 thousand households to be affected by monsoon-related disasters.

    The monsoon season in the Himalayan Nation generally begins on June 13. The exit, which was usually on September 23, has been extended to late October. This year, the clouds from the south entered Nepal from the western region on June 10, three days ahead of the usual onset date. Last year, the weather phenomenon started on June 14, a day after the normal onset day.

    The monsoon period, which delivers around 80 percent of the country’s total annual rainfall, generally lasts 105 days. But, in recent years, it has been taking more time to withdraw. Nepal has already recorded above-average rainfall this season.

    According to Met Office data, the country received 1,586.3 millimeters of rainfall as of Friday morning since the monsoon entered on June 10, 107.2 percent-7.2 per cent above the average monsoon rainfall.

    Normally, Nepal receives an average of 1,472 mm of rainfall in the four months – June, July, August, and September. In 2023, Nepal witnessed only 1,303 mm of rainfall in the season, 88.5 per cent of the average.

  • Nepal Tragedy: Indian Passenger Bus Plunges Into Marsyangdi River, Several Feared Dead |

    New Delhi: The tragic incident took place after an Indian passenger bus with 40 people onboard plunged into the Marsyangdi river in Nepal’s Tanahun district, Nepal Police said.

    “The bus bearing number plate UP FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river,” DSP Deepkumar Raya from the District Police Office Tanahun said, ANI reported.

    The bus was en route to Kathmandu from Pokhara. Further details awaited, the official said.

    Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said, “Regarding the Nepal incident We are establishing contact to find out if any person from Uttar Pradesh was on the bus.”

  • KP Sharma Oli to be appointed as Nepal PM today: Details |

    KP Sharma Oli is set to become Nepal’s new Prime Minister, on Sunday evening, setting him up for his fourth prime ministerial term. Meanwhile, the Oli’s Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and Nepali Congress (NC) coalition are finalising ministerial list ministers.

    Oli, the CPN-UML chairman held consultations with his alliance partner, the Nepali Congress, in preparing the list of ministers to be inducted into the new coalition government. Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel is expected to appoint Oli, 72, as the new prime minister.

    Paudel on Friday evening had called the political parties in the Nepali parliament to stake a claim for the Prime Minister as Pushpa Kamal Dahal lost a confidence motion on Friday. The President had called for the claim of stake as per theArticle 76 (2) of the constitution.

    “With the expiration of the deadline set by the President that ends at 5 PM (NST) today, President will appoint CPN-UML Chairman, KP Sharma Oli as the next Prime Minister. No other parties have staked the claim as of now and majority is claimed by UML Chairperson Oli so he will be appointed as Prime Minister. Also, the procedure for the oath taking as Prime Minister would also be initiated following it,” Kiran Pokhrel, press advisor to President confirmed ANI over phone. Oli and Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba jointly signed an application for the President to appoint the UML chief the new prime minister on Friday evening right after the results of vote of confidence. Oli, with the backing of the Nepali Congress and smaller parties on Friday, had submitted signatures of 165 lawmakers claiming majority support in the parliament for the Prime Ministership. As Oli owns the majority, no other parties are obvious to challenge Oli for the post.

    The Constitution of Nepal mandates a Prime Minister to cross a majority of 138 in the 275 strong House of Representatives to take over as the Prime Minister. Oli became the Prime Minister for the first time in October 2015 soon after the promulgation of the constitution that year and remained in power until August 2016.

    Right after the general election in 2017, Oli, who was able to usher nationalist sentiment amongst the people siding with China formed a government and remained in power from February 2018 to May 2021. Oli was again appointed as Prime Minister under the constitutional provision of 76 (3) from May 2021 to July 2021 after staking claim as the parliamentary leader of the largest party in parliament. While in power for about three years, Oli had dissolved the parliament twice, which was reinstated by the Supreme Court issuing a mandamus.

    As Oli prepares to take office for the fourth time, the largest coalition member in the new alliance, the Nepali Congress has finalised the criteria to pick the ministerial candidates. A central work execution committee meeting held on Saturday finalised the criteria tochoose the ministers from the party, informed party spokesperson Prakash SharanMahat.

    As per the sources, Prakash Man Singh will lead the party on board the government from the Nepali Congress while Bishnu Poudel from UML will take oath as Deputy Prime Ministers after Oli’s swearing-in ceremony. As per the party sources from the Oli-led UML, Poudel will be taking over the Finance Ministry. Congress sources confirmed that Singh will be taking over as Defence Minister.

    The Nepali Congress and CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist) has signed an agreement on July 2 to divide 9 and 8 ministries respectively on board the council of ministry. “Both the parties are in close coordination and working on to finalize the first round of ministries. Discussions are being held to finalize as many as 15 new ministers to induct into to be formed new council of ministers on Monday itself,” sources from both the parties confirmed. Nepal’s former First Lady and the only billionaire in the country is also in the list of possible ministers. As per the Congress party sources, Arzu Rana Deuba, the former first lady and spouse of Former Prime Minister and President of Nepali Congress is pinning for Foreign Ministry. “The Party is about to agree to let the former first lady to take the Foreign Ministry provided her interest and diplomatic connections she has with South. Binod Chaudhary, the sole billionaire of Nepal is also in the list of the possible ministers,” a senior party leader from the Congress confirmed ANI. Along with former first lady Deuba, Chaudhary and Singh, Congress is holding discussion about sending Ramesh Lekhak, Jeevan Pariyar, Ajay Chaurasiya, Chandra Bhandari, Pradeep Poudel, Dipak Giri, Dipak Khadka, Ain Bahadur Shahi, Hridayaram Thani, Arjun Narsingh KC, Ramnath Adhikari, Kishor Singh Rathour, and Tejulal Chaudhary are among the likely ministerial candidates from the Congress. The CPN-UML on the other hand has given authority to party chair Oli to choose the ministers. UML leaders themselves are not sure about who will be the ministers from the party except Bishnu Poudel who is taking over as the Finance Minister. As per the July 2 deal between Congress chief Deuba and UML chairman, Oli, the two parties will lead the government on a rotational basis until the next general elections in 2027. But, the deal has not been made public till date.

  • Nepal nominates 8 new ambassadors, including for India |

    New Delhi: Nepal has nominated ambassadors for eight countries, including India, a little over two weeks after recalling the incumbents.

    According to the Cabinet sources, former chief secretary and Nepal’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Lokdarshan Regmi, has been nominated as the new Nepalese ambassador to India.

    Regmi has earlier held positions of Home Secretary, Finance Secretary and Secretary at the Ministry of Land Reform and Management.

    The decision was taken by Nepal’s Cabinet on Friday.

    Earlier on June 6, the Nepal government had recalled ambassadors from 11 countries, including those serving in India and the US and appointed under the Nepali Congress’ quota, three months after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ terminated his alliance with the party and joined hands with former prime minister KP Sharma Oli.

    The development had come three months after the coalition was formed with the support of CPN-UML.

    The government has named former Commerce and Industry Secretary Chandra Ghimire as Nepal’s new ambassador to the United States replacing the incumbent ambassador, Sridhar Khatri while Bijan Pant has been named Nepal’s new ambassador to the United Kingdom.

    All the ambassador nominees need to undergo parliamentary hearings before the president appoints them to their respective positions.
