  • ‘PM Modi To Play Important Role’: Indian Envoy To Italy Ahead Of G7 Summit |

Fasano (Italy): A day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Italy to attend the G7 Summit, where India has been invited as an Outreach Country, the Indian ambassador to Italy, Vani Rao said that

PM Modi will play an important role in one of the global platforms, to engage with other world leaders present at the G7 Summit on issues of importance to India, as well as to the Global South.

Speaking to ANI, Envoy Vani Rao said that PM Modi will also follow up on some of the key issues that were there during India’s G20 presidency.

“It is an important visit. Firstly, it is an opportunity for the prime minister to play an important role in one of the global platforms. It also marks continuity because he had participated in the G7 summit last year,” the ambassador said.

PM Modi is set to visit Italy to participate in the annual summit of G7 advanced economies, marking his first international trip since beginning his third consecutive term in office. The G7 summit will take place at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13 to 15.

India’s participation at this G7 Summit acquires particular salience in the context of India’s recently held, not so recent, presidency of the G20, where India took a leading role in building global consensus on several contentious issues. India has so far organized two sessions of the Voice of the Global South Summit, which have been aimed at bringing the interests, priorities, and concerns of the Global South on the global stage.

“It allows the prime minister to also follow up on some of the key issues that we had in the G-20 presidency, which he had chaired last year. It’s an invitation to the prime minister from the Italian prime minister. India has been selected as a partner for the G7 summit. If I’m not mistaken, India is the only Asian country to be selected as a partner. It is an opportunity also to speak on some of the issues like food security, energy, clean technologies, AI, and other aspects, which are very important to the Global South, ” she said.

This will be India’s 11th participation in the G7 Summit and Prime Minister Modi’s fifth consecutive participation at the G7 Summit. On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy, PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings and discussions with the leaders of the G7, as well as the Outreach Countries and the international organizations.

The ambassador emphasised that issues including food security, energy, clean technologies and AI will be discussed.

“Issues like food security, energy, clean technologies, AI and other aspects, will be an important agenda item here for the prime minister to share his views and thoughts,” she told ANI.

Responding on whether there will be any bilateral agreements signed during the bilateral meeting with Italian PM Meloni, the ambassador said that “definitely”, there will be some progress in the bilateral collaboration and agenda.

“It would be very premature for me to mention what are the outcomes of that meeting. But definitely, the high-level meeting itself is a big signal that the two leaders are invested in the relationship and the two countries want to elevate their cooperation in many domains, ” Rao said.

Highlighting whether the Russia-Ukraine war and the Middle East conflict will be on the agenda during the G7 Summit, the Indian ambassador stressed that as the meeting is going to be held amid these global developments, these issues will also be on the agenda.

“The G7 and the partners will engage on a variety of issues. One is, the key economic issues that are on the table right now, which include food security, climate change, sustainable development, the role of artificial intelligence, energy security and others. These will be one set of issues,” she said.

The ambassador added, “But obviously because the meeting itself is taking amid very key global and regional developments, they will also be on the agenda of the leaders. And India’s position on many of these issues is well known and the prime minister would be articulating his thoughts on how to address these issues,” she added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to leave for Italy on Thursday to participate in the 50th G7 Summit.

Addressing a special briefing on PM Modi’s upcoming visit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said, “At the invitation of Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be travelling to Apulia, Italy tomorrow to participate in the 50th G7 Summit which is to be held there on June 14 where India has been invited as an Outreach Country.”

During the Summit, PM Modi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Giorgia Meloni.
“They last met during the COP28 Summit in Abu Dhabi in December 2023,” Kwatra said.

In the meeting, the two Prime Ministers are expected to review the entire gamut of bilateral ties and give directions for next steps, he said.

Italy is the Chair of G7 this year and is hosting the Summit of the informal grouping of seven of the world’s advanced economies which also includes Canada, France, Germany Japan the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Union.

  • PM Modi’s Oath-Taking Ceremony: 5 World Leaders Elected to Power More Than Twice |

New Delhi: PM Modi joins the ranks of world leaders like former United States President Franklin D Roosevelt and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who were elected for more than two terms while maintaining a largely consistent vote share.

    Former American President Franklin Roosevelt

In the international context, PM Modi’s popularity as a leader stands close to former American President Franklin Roosevelt who won four presidential elections from 1932 to 1944, all with a largely consistent vote percentage. Roosevelt won his first election with a vote percentage of 57.4 per cent in 1932 and his last in 1944 with a share of 53.4 per cent. Roosevelt was the last American President to serve more than two terms.

    Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel

PM Modi’s third term can also be compared to the success of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who won four consecutive elections from 2005 to 2017. Her vote share fell in 2009 and in 2017.

Former Singapore PM Lee Kwan Yew

Lee Kwan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, won six consecutive elections between 1968 and 1988 and his vote share reduced in his second, fourth and fifth terms. Lee Kwan Yew won the 1968 election with a vote share of 86.7 per cent and his term in 1988 came with a vote share of 63.1 per cent.

    Former Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru registered a vote share of 45 per cent in the 1952 election which rose to 47.8 per cent in 1957, but in the 1963 election the vote share dipped to 44.7 per cent, which is marginally lower than his first electoral win.

  • Police Complaint Filed Against PM Modi In Assam Over Mahatma Gandhi Remarks |

A police complaint has been lodged by National Award-winning filmmaker Luit Kumar Barman against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his controversial remarks against Mahatma Gandhi, news agency PTI reported. Barman claimed that Modi had made a “highly derogatory statement” about the Father of the Nation in his complaint, which was submitted on Wednesday night to the Hatigaon police station in Guwahati. According to the police, no formal complaint has yet been filed in this regard, and a preliminary investigation is ongoing.

In a recent interview, Prime Minister Modi said, “that Mahatma Gandhi was a great person all over the world. Wasn’t it our responsibility over the last 75 years to make sure the entire world knew about Mahatma Gandhi? I’m sorry to say that no one knows about him. When the film ‘Gandhi’ was first released, there was widespread interest in who this person was. We have not done this…”

“This is a highly derogatory statement and cannot be accepted by a citizen of India,” Barman said in his complaint. “We cannot tolerate insults to Mahatma Gandhi as citizens. No movie is required to introduce him to the world,” said Barman, the producer of the Rajat Kamal-winning Assamese film “Boomba Ride” from 2021.

  • PM Modi Did Not Deliver ‘Guarantees’, 83% Youths Jobless In Country: TMC |

Kolkata: Alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guarantees on various issues had not been delivered, senior Trinamool Congress leader Amit Mitra on Sunday claimed that 83 per cent of jobless people in the country are youths.

Mitra reiterated his party’s stand that the TMC is with the INDIA alliance, stating that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s rebuff to senior party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and his retort is their internal matter.

“Around 83 per cent of the jobless people in the country are young men and women,” Mitra, a former Finance minister of West Bengal in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, claimed at a press conference here.

“Two-thirds of the educated young men and women are unemployed,” he said.

Claiming that the Skill India programme of the NDA government for preparing skilled manpower has not borne the desired fruits, he alleged that only around 4 per cent of the country’s youth are getting vocational training.

Alleging that PM Modi’s guarantees on various issues have not been delivered in actuality, he claimed “that 51 crimes against women are committed every hour in the country.”

The former Finance minister of Bengal claimed that ‘household net financial savings’ in the country has reached the lowest point in 50 years.

Claiming that the guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) was not being given to farmers for their produce, Mitra alleged that “30 farmers commit suicide every day.”

He claimed that the external debt of the country has increased 100 per cent in the last ten years. “It has risen from Rs 3,65,000 crore ten years back to Rs 7,48,000 crore in the 2022-23 financial year,” he said.

Mitra claimed that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre has stopped funds to the state after the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won the 2021 West Bengal assembly polls with a huge number of seats.

“We have not received a single Rupee under MNREGA and Awas Yojana because they lost in 2021,” he said, asking whether this was “the Prime Minister’s guarantee.”

Stating that more than 2.15 crore women of Bengal have been financially empowered under the ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ scheme, Mitra said that now the BJP is also speaking of increasing the money to women by Rs 100.

Mitra reiterated the party’s stand that the TMC is with the opposition INDIA alliance, stating that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s rebuff to senior party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and his retort is their internal matter.

“As far as Trinamool Congress is concerned, we were with the INDIA alliance as one of the founders, we are there and we will be in it, this is Mamata Banerjee’s position,” he said. The TMC had earlier accused Chowdhury of being a stumbling block in the alliance in the state.
