  • 'I Respect Them But…': Hardik Pandya On Rohit Sharma Fans Trolling Him After Getting MI Captaincy In IPL 2024 | cricket news

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya opened up on a lot of hot topics related to the franchise and the various changes that have taken place in the last six months or so. Immediately after Cricket World Cup 2023 when India fans were still recovering from the heartbreak of loss in the final, Mumbai Indians dropped a bombshell on their fans by announcing Hardik Pandya as the captain. The move seemed logical as MI looked to build a future leader. However, it did not go down well with a part of MI's fanbase, especially Rohit fans.

In a matter of hours, MI lost lakhs of followers over Instagram and till date, they receive heat from Rohit fans in every post they make on Instagram. Hardik has faced a lot of flak for making a return to MI from Gujarat Titans (GT), some even racially abusing, calling him as 'Ch**ri'.

But amid all the noise, Hardik has kept quiet and worked harder to get back in shape after suffering an ankle injury during the World Cup. For the first time, during the MI press conference, did Hardik open up on the change in captaincy and the backlash he received due to it.

Hardik told the reporters that he respects the emotions of the fans but he cannot control the uncontrollables. “I respect the fans' emotions but I can only control the controllable. I respect them but I will focus on what I can be doing (as captain),” Hardik said.

The all-rounder also spoke on his return to MI, saying that he never thought he could reach at this stage of his career and come so far from where he began and a lot of credit behind his success goes to MI where his cricketing journey began .

“It won't be any different because he will always be there to help me out if I need his help. At the same time, his (Rohit) being the Indian captain helps me because this team has achieved all its glory under his belt. On leading Rohit Sharma in IPL

One of the challenges for a junior, who started his cricket under a senior cricketer, to captain him, in IPL, domestic cricket or international cricket. Many top leaders have done that. MS Dhoni led a side which had Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly etc. Virat Kohli, Rohit have also led an Indian team that had Dhoni in it. Hardik faces the same scenario with Rohit in the MI set up.

However, the new captain feels the task won't be as difficult as it sounds. He feels playing experience with Rohit will come handy when leading the former captain, who won MI five championships. “It won't be any different. He will be helping me when I need it. As mentioned, he is the Indian captain and I've played my whole career under him. So, I don't feel it would be awkward, ” said Hardik.

He added that he had not got time to speak to Rohit since taking over as MI captain but there is a reason why. “I haven't got a lot of time to talk with Rohit because he has been touring. I will definitely catch up when he links up with the team,” said MI captain.

In November last year, the 30-year-old player moved back from Gujarat Titans (GT) to his former franchise. The star all-rounder spent two momentous years with GT, spearheading their campaign in the cash-rich league with aplomb. In GT's debut season in 2022, Hardik got them off to a fairytale start, with the team lifting the coveted trophy.

In 31 matches for GT, the right-hand batsman has scored 833 runs at an average of 37.86 and a strike rate of over 133, with six half-centuries and a best score of 87*. He also took 11 wickets for the team, with the best figures of 3/17.

Pandya also played 92 matches for MI from 2015-2021, scoring 1,476 runs at an average of 27.33 at a strike rate of over 153, with four half-centuries and best score of 91. He also took 42 wickets for the team, with the best bowling figures of 3/20. Pandya has won five IPL trophies, four with MI (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) and GT (2022).

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will start on March 22, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) set to clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a South Indian derby at their home arena – MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Last year's runners-up Gujarat Titans and five-time champions Mumbai Indians will square off against each other in a mouth-watering clash on March 24 at Ahmedabad. The fixture has gained a lot of hype because of star all-rounder Pandya's move to his former franchise MI following two great seasons with GT. Shubman Gill has taken over the captaincy of GT.

  • 'I Don't Think Rohit Sharma Was Superior As Captain,' Ex-England Cricketer Takes Swipe At Indian Skipper Post Series Win Against England | cricket news

Former England spinner Graeme Swann doesn't believe Rohit Sharma's captaincy was better than Ben Stokes' in the five-match Test series. Rather, it was a lethal set of bowlers that “did the trick” for the India skipper. While Stokes' leadership style has attracted all the attention prior to and during the series, Rohit's team emerged 4-1 winners in the end.

“I don't think he has been superior as a captain because his bowlers have done the trick for him. I think he's got more weapons at his armoury,” Swann told PTI Videos in an exclusive chat after India inflicted an innings and 64- run defeat on England in the fifth and final Test on Saturday. (Rahul Dravid Names Greatest Six-Hitter India Has Produced; He Is Not MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh)

“He's been good don't get me wrong, Rohit Sharma, but, I don't think if you pick this apart and say Stokes has captained badly, I think you are barking up the wrong tree there. Rohit Sharma's bowlers have really come to town for him, come to the party for him, in the last four Test matches, they didn't in the first one but they have done for the last four,” Swann noted.

    No blaming Baseball

Far from blaming 'Bazball' for England's loss, Swann said Stokes and Co actually failed to play the brand of cricket that has brought them success in recent times. Swann's observation is in stark contrast to the views expressed by few other former players who attributed the drubbing to the visitors' fixation with Bazball.

“I don't think we have seen Bazball in this trip whatsoever, we saw it for one innings of this Test series, that's when Ollie Pope got a 190, and that was the definition of bazball,” he said. (Team India Back On Top Of ICC Test Team Rankings After 4-1 Win Over England)

“I think England, where they have fallen flat in this series is, they have not been brave enough. I don't think they have played what you guys in the media call Bazball. I think if they had, I think this series would have been closer if I'm honest.”

Bazball, which is derived from England Test coach Brendon McCullum's nickname Baz, fell flat as the tourists capitulated inside three days in the fifth Test, helping India secure their 17th straight Test series triumph on home soil. On the match getting over in under three days, Swann said: “I would say it's a very good advertisement for Test cricket, because it was an exciting match.

“India were just too good for England in this game. It's always at the end of a series if it's already been won by one team, you worry that this will happen, the resistance will be completely blown away and it was in this Test match. So England will have to go home and shake themselves off wondering where it went so badly wrong. India are world class especially their bowling attack, and that was really shown again in this Test match.”

As a former off-spinner himself, Swann applauded Ravichandran Ashwin's stupendous performance on his 100 Test match. (Rohit Sharma Makes Big Statement On His Retirement, Says 'I Feel In Last 2 Or 3 Years…')

“You know what it's brilliant, to get a fifer on his hundredth Test match. I have not actually seen him, I was looking to go and congratulate him myself but I will have to do that at the hotel later.”Bowling so well and making those early inroads, that was brilliant, possibly one of his best fivers in his 100 Test matches, so you have got to take your hat off to Ashwin,” he observed.

On James Anderson becoming the first fast bowler to reach 700 wickets, Swann said: “He's a joke, Jimmy is an absolute joke, how he has kept going for all this amount of time. When I say it's a joke I mean that in a good way, he's been incredible, and to get 700 wickets, well you know it's almost nonsensical the achievement and I love him to bits. I was kind of hoping when he almost bounced Kuldeep out, almost hit his gloves and bobbled in the air, that would have been the dream for Jimmy, because he has not bowled a decent bouncer for 10 years, but he has now.”

  • 'This Is Clownery..': Social Media Furious After Ben Stokes' Ball To Dismiss Rohit Sharma Hailed By British Media As 'The Best In Series' | cricket news

Ben Stokes decided it was enough waiting for the first ball in eight months. Wickets were hard to come by in Dharamsala and despite no nod from the team's physio, Stokes felt he needed to lead from the front and bowl a few overs. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill's partnership had already pushed England on back foot on day 2 of the fifth and last Test. England were desperate for a breakthrough and not many had expected that Stokes would provide that so soon.

The first delivery in 251 days from Stokes landed outside off at good length. It held its line before shaping away ever-so-slightly to hit the off. Rohit could not do much about it. That was a peach from one of cricket's greatest all-rounders. Rohit had a smile on his face as he walked back. He knew he had been done by an excellent delivery and he needed not regret the dismissal.

Stokes was happy but he stopped himself from celebrating it in an animated way. However, his teammates were maybe impressed. Mark Wood had his hand off his head and a big shock on his face. Stokes bowled the first ball in 251 days and it worked. It cleaned up a batter who had faced over 160 deliveries and never looked like getting out.

The social media was soon abuzz with reactions to Stokes. While many hailed Stokes for being a great leader and risking his injury to come and deliver the goods, many went on to call the delivery the best in the series. BCC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew went on to compare Stokes first-ball wicket to that Ian Botham's first-ball wicket after he came back from 63-day drugs suspension.

“Ben Stokes provided an Ian Botham moment of scene-stealing drama to announce his return…,” wrote Telegraph's Nick Hoult.

Stokes, who is going through a lean patch as batsman, began to get massive praise for this one ball. This was not appreciated by many Indian fans on social media, who reminded the world that Bumrah had bowled a screamer to Ollie Pope not long ago. Another Twitter user and a fan said that sports website talkSport called Stokes' delivery to Rohit as the ball of the series. That user ranted, “Last piece of rant for today..TalkSport called Stokes ball as the best ball of the series. I mean..Bumrah literally had stokes cleaned up in Hyderabad and then Pope in Vizag. These are just two of so many I can put across here. This is beyond delusion..this is clownery.”

  • India Vs England 5th Test Playing 11s: Will KL Rahul And Jasprit Bumrah Return For Dharamsala Test? What We Know So Far | cricket news

India’s wicketkeeper and batsman KL Rahul played just one Test before he was ruled out of the second due to an issue in his quadriceps. He was rested in Visakhapatnam but even after a long gap before the Rajkot game, Rahul was only at 90 percent fitness and BCCI didn’t risk including him in the squad. He has not attained full fitness yet and also missed the Ranchi Test. As per a new report on Cricbuzz, Rahul’s participation in Dharamsala is still unclear as the batsman has flown to London for an expert opinion on his injury.

Rahul is still feeling pain in his right quadriceps for which he had undergone a surgery in London. He made his comeback in Asia Cup 2023 after which he successfully played in the ODI World Cup and in South Africa. But the pain is back and BCCI as well as National Croquet Academy (NCA) don’t want to take any risks with him as the cricketer is of utmost importance to them.

With India already 3-1 up in the series, BCCI might not want to take any risk with a 90 percent fit Rahul. It has also been reported that one more batter and one bowler might be rested in Dharamsala as BCCI looks to manage workload of players.

The good news for Jasprit Bumrah fans is that he is likely to return for the Dharamshala Test. This is the ground which offers assistance to the Pacers and for the first time in the series we might get to see three paces in both the playing 11s.

Coming back to Rahul, he also leads Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The fact that he is very close to regaining full fitness means Rahul is certain to play IPL 2024. Even if he misses the first few games, he should be able to get back to LSG midway through the season.

As far as England are concerned, they are unlikely to make massive changes to the playing 11 knowing they would want to finish the series on a high note, going back with a 3-2 scoreline rather than 4-1. One change that may want to make is including Dan Lawrence in place of Jonny Bairstow. Lawrence has been warming the bench so far and with Bairstow in such a poor form, Lawrence can be tried at the No 5 slot. Knowing fast-paced nature of Dharamsala pitch, we might also see three pacers also in England XI in the form of James Anderson, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson. As per report, England and India are set to fly to Dharamsala on March 2.

India’s playing 11 for 5th Test Vs England may look like this: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal (Devdutt Padikkal), Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Axar Patel/Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj

England probable playing 11: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow/Dan Lawrence, Ben Stokes, Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, James Anderson, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson

  • ‘Grit, Determination, Resilience’: Virat Kohli Reacts To India Ending Bazball’s Winning Streak With Series Victory In Ranchi | cricket news

India beat England in the fourth Test in Ranchi to claim five-match series 3-1, all thanks to an all-round performance by the team. The best thing about this victory, yet again, was the resilience shown by the youngsters as Dhruv Jurel, Shubman Gill rose to the occasion when chips were down during the chase. India were 120 for 5, with 70-odd still required and with 5 sessions to go in the match. It was a matter of batting well in just one session to guide India to win and this is exactly what they did, taking the hosts to win with 5 wickets in hand.

After lunch on Day when Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan fell to back to back deliveries from Shoaib Bashir, it appeared as if this was England’s day. But Jurel and Gill put on a rock-solid show to deny English any wicket and got the win. Jurel, especially, batted with a lot of maturity that is rare to see in someone who is just 2 Test matches old. He rotated strike and gave Gill a breather at the other end. Gill finished with an unbeaten 52 off 124 balls that included just two sixes, and those two were also scored at te very end.

Virat Kohli, who decided to skip the series because of birth of his second child with wife Anushka Sharma, acknowledged the effort put in by the youngsters and the whole team. He did not waste too much time to take his thoughts to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “YES. Phenomenal series win by our young team. Showed grit, determination and resilience.”

He commended the players for their composed and spirited performance, highlighting their dedication to being there and their journey through local and domestic cricket. Sharma acknowledged the challenges of Test cricket and praised the team’s response, crediting their clarity and determination.

He specifically mentioned the impressive performance of Jurel, who demonstrated composure and skill in his second match, contributing significantly to the team’s success. Despite missing key players, Sharma emphasized the team’s resilience and ability to step up to the challenge. Looking ahead, he emphasized the team’s focus on each upcoming Test match and their determination to continue winning. Despite the unfamiliarity of some players with a five-test series, Sharma reassured that the team would approach the final test with the same determination and aim for victory.

Coming to the third Test, Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his brilliant run of form with third Test century and Shubman Gill hit an unbeaten half-century to help India secure a 322-run lead against England on the third day of the third Test at Rajkot on Saturday.

India ended the day at 196/2, with Shubman Gill (65*) and Kuldeep Yadav (3*) unbeaten. India started the final session at 44/1, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (19*) and Shubman Gill (5*) unbeaten. India reached the 50-run mark in 19 overs. Jaiswal and Shubman continued to hit at least a boundary per over, stitching a 50-run partnership.

Both young batsmen let their arms loose in the 27th over, smashing veteran pacer James Anderson for three fours and a six, with Jaiswal delivering more beating. Jaiswal reached his half-century in 80 balls, smashing spinner Tom Hartley for two sixes in the 28th over. India reached the 100-run mark in 27.5 overs.

Jaiswal and Gill were toying with the England spinners, bringing up their 100-run partnership in 122 balls. India reached the 150-run mark in 38.1 overs. Jaiswal continued his rich run of form, making his third century in 122 balls, with nine fours and five sixes. (Why Team India Is Wearing Black Arm Band In India vs England 3rd Test Day 3?)

With a six, Gill reached his fifth Test fifty in 98 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes. After experiencing some issues with his back, Jaiswal walked off the field, unbeaten on 104* and Rajat Patidar walked in. Rajat however, was dismissed for a duck by Tom Hartley. India was 191/2. India ended the final session without any further loss of wicket.

Earlier, before the final season, Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal came to open for India and the two batters put on 30 runs before England struck with the first wicket, Rohit, who scored a century in the first innings, went back on score of 19 runs. which included three boundaries.

Gill and Jaiswal put together 14 runs so far, ending the Tea session at 44/1.

Before this, Right-arm seamer Mohammad Siraj’s outstanding spell helped India take a 170-run lead at Tea on the third day of the third Test being played at Niranjan Shah Stadium on Saturday. England resumed the post-lunch session from 290/5 with Ben Stokes (39) and Ben Foakes (6) unbeaten at the crease.

Inside nine runs, the Three Lions first lost the wicket of Foakes (13) and then the wicket of Stokes (41). England were 299 and lost their next two wickets at the score of 314 runs as Rehan Ahmed (6) and Tom Hartley (9) went to the pavilion. James Anderson was the last man to go and scored only one run.

English were all-out for 319 runs it is the third successive time that India has taken a first-innings lead in the five-match series. India led by 124 runs before the start of their second innings. Other than left-hand opener Ben Duckett, who scored 153 runs with the help of 23 fours and two sixes, no bather was able to hit a big score.

For India, Siraj snapped four crucial wickets in his spell of 21.1 overs and conceded 84 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav got two wickets each and Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin had to be satisfied with one wicket each.

Earlier, starting day three, Jasprit Bumrah drew first blood as he removed Joe Root for 18 runs, breaking a 42-run partnership. Root tried to play a scoop shot and steal a boundary. However, the shot lacked timing as Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was placed at the slip, took a fantastic catch.

Kuldeep Yadav provided Team India with another breakthrough as he dismissed Jonny Bairstow for a duck. Despite losing two wickets in quick succession, England kept up the momentum. Duckett took a single off Kuldeep Yadav’s delivery and brought up his 150. He took 139 balls to reach the feat.

Duckett’s splendid innings came to an end as he tried to play a shot into the cover for a boundary but Gill intercepted and took a brilliant catch of the bowling of Kuldeep. After the dismissal of Duckett, the onus lay on the shoulders of Ben Stokes to take England ahead in the game and the captain kept the scoreboard ticking. The duo of Stokes and Ben Foakes rotated the strike, not allowing the Indian bowlers to settle down while whacking the loose balls on offer.

The visitors ended the first session of the day at 290/5 with Stokes (39) and Ben Foakes (6) at the crease. Earlier at stumps on day two, England were sitting pretty at 207/2, going at a run-a-ball rate and trailing India by just 238 runs.

Brief Score: India 445 & 196/2 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 104*, Shubman Gill 65*, Joe Root 1/70) vs England 319 (Ben Duckett 153, Ben Stokes 41, Mohammad Siraj 4/84).

  • Explained: Was Zak Crawley Not Out In 2nd Innings Of Vizag Test? Fans Find Fault In Ball-Tracking Of DRS Technology | cricket news

Zak Crawley played a fine innings of 72 runs which came of 132 balls on Day 4 of the ongoing 2nd Test at Visakhapatnam. His innings was cut short by Kuldeep Yadav but the dismissal has started a Twitter debate. Was Crawly out or not out? Crawley was going well despite wickets falling at the other end and it seemed he would do to India what Pope had done to hosts in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test. But it was not to be as Kuldeep got better of him with a beauty.

    The wicket: all that happened

Kuldeep Yadav bowled a ball to Crawley. Crawley tried to hit the ball off the back foot but missed, and the ball hit his leg. The umpire initially said it wasn’t out, but India asked for a review. The review showed that the ball would have hit the stumps, and Crawley was declared out. This was a crucial wicket just before lunch, as Crawley had been batting well for England, scoring 73 runs.

What’s the debate over the dismissal?

The England camp was surprised to see the dismissal. Twitter also started to debate the wicket. It looked not out by naked eyes and umpire Marais Erasmus also judged it as same. But th as per the DRS, the ball tracker said that the impact was on the line. However, various screenshots by the fans suggest that the ball was already in line and spinning away from the leg stump before hitting the pads.

The screenshots indicate that only 2.5 stumps were visible when the ball made contact with the batsman’s leg. According to standard rules, Hawk-Eye should not be giving a ‘hitting’ result on the stumps in such a scenario; at most, it should have been considered umpire’s call. India seems to have benefited from a fortunate turn of events with this decision.

One fan, who kep a close eye on the game, tweeted: “That looked very off honestly. 3rd stump was almost visible when the ball hit the pads. Very hard to believe that impact was in line, not even in umpire’s call.”

It will be interesting to see what are umpires’ thoughts are at the end of the match. England, looks like, may have been done in by a technological error. Not that India is worrying too much about it, at the moment. England, too, can do very little about it. Technology is never 100 percent but it makes decisions more accurate. However, it too errs at time and cricketers will have to live by this fact.
