  • Migrant Worker From Punjab’s Amritsar Shot Dead By Terrorists In J&K’s Srinagar; Search Operation Begins |

    NEW DELHI: In an unpleasant development, a migrant worker from Punjab’s Amritsar was shot dead by some unidentified terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s capital city Srinagar on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Amritpal Singh, hailed from Amritsar district of Punjab. He was a hawker, sources said. One more person was also injured during the attack. 

    “Terrorists fired upon a non-local identified as Amritpal Singh resident of Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Srinagar, who succumbed to the injuries. One more person is grievously injured and evacuated for medical attention. Area has been cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” a tweet from Kashmir Zone Police said.

    According to the police, the incident took place at Shaheed Gunj in Srinagar after which the entire area was cordoned off and a massive search operation was launched to track down attackers. The other injured person has been evacuated and is being treated by doctors, said reports. 

    Earlier, in October, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh was shot dead by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama. It was the second terror attack in the region in just 24 hours. Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani was shot thrice while he was playing cricket in the Eidgah area.

    In the past, several attacks on migrant workers have taken place in the Union Territory. Jammu and Kashmir has been rattled by such attacks and since October 2019, non-local workers have often been targeted by terrorists in the region.

    The attack in Srinagar today comes after a month when terrorists fired on army vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch, prompting soldiers to fire back. Reports indicated that the terrorists may have escaped after the initial exchange of gunfire, which included bullets fired from a nearby hill in the Krishna Ghati area.

    Income Tax raids in Jammu and Kashmir continued for the second day. The Income Tax team raided the premises of a major business group engaged in various sectors like cement, steel, glass, plywood, real estate, tourism, textiles and healthcare in Kashmir Valley. Sources said that during the raid, Income Tax officials have seized cash, documents and important evidence.

    The Income Tax team conducted raids in Srinagar, Sopore, Budgam, Sonmarg, Pulwama areas of Kashmir Valley and more than 40 premises in Delhi.

    Incriminating documents, handwritten diaries and digital devices have been seized during the search operation. Variation in stock was also seen in many factories and retail shops. Evidence has also been found of undeclared investments worth more than Rs. 50,000 in immovable properties located in the Kashmir Valley. The team has seized Rs 50 crore from various premises.

    The investigation so far has revealed that the major business group tried to suppress its taxable income by under-reporting its sales in the cement sector. Seized evidence in the form of cash vouchers and selling challans in respect of Rs 60 crore in the last several years, which have not been recorded in the account books.

    Evidence and documents of on-money in the real estate business of the business group running in Kashmir and Delhi have been recovered. The estimate for hiding the account book entries is around Rs 10 crore. The head of this business group has admitted that this system has been used for undeclared income.

    Cash worth more than Rs 1.70 crore was seized during the raid. Apart from this, gold was also recovered. The inspection of the matter is going on.
