  • Shaheen Shah Afridi’s Unique Wicket Celebration For Newborn Son Goes Viral During Test Against Bangladesh- WATCH | cricket news

Pakistan’s fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi marked the birth of his first child in a memorable way during the opening Test against Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Shaheen and his wife, Ansha, welcomed their son, whom they named Ali Yar. Despite initial speculations that Shaheen might skip the Test series for the birth of his child remarks made by Pakistan’s red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie the determined pacer chose to represent his country in the match.

In the game, Shaheen had to put in considerable effort to claim his wickets as Bangladesh secured a substantial lead of 117 runs in their first innings. Known for his usual celebration style of raising his arms after taking a wicket, Shaheen chose to celebrate differently this time. After claiming his first wicket of the match, he performed a cradling gesture to honor his newborn son, showcasing his happiness and pride. The celebration came after Bangladesh batsman Hasan Mahmud attempted a shot on the on-side, only to edge the ball. Mohammad Rizwan made no mistake in taking the catch, allowing Shaheen to open his wicket tally. Later in the innings, Shaheen dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz, ending with respectable figures of 30 overs, conceding 88 runs and taking two wickets.

Following the birth of his child, Shaheen Shah Afridi received a flood of congratulatory messages from the cricket community. Among those extending their well wishes was Arshad Nadeem, the recent gold medalist in men’s javelin at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem, who set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, also congratulated Shahid Afridi on becoming a grandfather.

    Pakistan Struggling Against Bangladesh

On the cricketing front, Pakistan displayed an inconsistent performance on what was considered an excellent pitch for batting. While they managed to post a decent score initially, led by Shan Masood, the team’s bowlers struggled to maintain the momentum. Bangladesh capitalized on the favorable batting conditions, with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring a remarkable 191 runs and Shadman Islam contributing a solid 93. These significant innings ensured that Bangladesh comfortably surpassed Pakistan’s total, putting the hosts on the back foot as the match progressed.

  • Shahid Afridi calls for PCB action on Babar Azam’s captaincy after T20 World Cup 2024 debate | Cricket News

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has come down heavily on embattled skipper Babar Azam for the team’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup, saying that he had been given enough opportunities to lead the side, and it was time for the PCB to take a call on his captaincy. Former champions Pakistan lost to newcomers USA and arch-rivals India to be eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup held in the USA and West Indies.

“Babar has got a full open chance to lead Pakistan. He has been given enough time to show his worth as captain. Now whatever surgery the PCB wants to do, they should take their decision,” Afridi told the media in Birmingham where he is taking part in the World Legends Championship.

“I have also captained Pakistan and so have Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq but whenever the team has performed badly in the World Cups, first thing the captain faces the knife (sic),” he said.

Babar has led Pakistan in four World Cups and two Asia Cups. Afridi also said that if the PCB decides to appoint a new skipper, he and the two new foreign coaches — Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie — should be given enough time to prove themselves.

“Whatever decision the PCB takes it should take but it should give time to the captain, coach and the system to work,” he added. The former skipper also disagreed with the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to sack national selectors Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq.

The two former Test players were removed from the selection committee in the wake of the team’s disastrous T20 World Cup campaign. “This surgery makes no sense to me… Sacking just two selectors,” said Afridi.

Afridi’s son-in-law, Shaheen Shah Afridi, has come under the scanner after a television channel claimed that the fast bowler was not at his best behaviour during the World Cup.

The channel claimed that white-ball coach Kirsten, in his report, had noted that Shaheen was not cooperative with the management and there was a general breakdown of discipline in the team. The channel also claimed that the PCB had been told that senior team manager, Wahab Riaz and manager Mansoor Rana ignored Shaheen’s behaviour and did not bother to talk to him about it.

There have also been accusations that Wahab and Razzaq even tried to pressure other selectors to pick some players who were not in form at that time.

  • ‘I Have 2011 ODI World Cup At Home:’ Suresh Raina Hits Back At Pakistani Journalist Who Mocked Him Using Shahid Afridi’s Name | Cricket News

Suresh Raina did not hold back after a Pakistan journalist mocked him with a post saying that Shahid Afridi is an ambassador for the T20 World Cup 2024 and the former India cricketer is not. Raina straight away replied with a reminder of the 2011 ODI World Cup match which had India and Pakistan locking horns at Mohali. All of the fuss about this banter/battle of words is coming after Raina took Afridi’s name on air when asked about coming out of retirement.

The ever-witty Raina replied: “Suresh Raina hu, Shahid Afridi nahi” (I am Suresh Raina, not Shahid Afridi),” referencing former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi’s multiple retirements. This left the commentary box in splits. (Virat Kohli to announce retirement soon? Michael Vaughan makes bold prediction)

In a similar vein, Imran Siddique, a journalist from Pakistan’s Dawn News, tried to take a dig at Raina by pointing out that Afridi is an ambassador for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

He posted: “ICC has named Shahid Afridi as an ambassador for ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Hello Suresh Raina?” (USA defeat Bangladesh in historic T20I series victory ahead of T20 World Cup 2024)

Suresh Raina went into full savage mode, reopening old wounds for Pakistani fans. He reminded the journalist of the 2011 World Cup semi-final in Mohali, where India triumphed over Pakistan. He added that even though he might not be an ambassador for the T20 World Cup, he still has the 2011 World Cup at home.

“I’m not an ICC ambassador, but I have the 2011 World Cup at my house. Remember the game at Mohali? Hope it brings back some unforgettable memories for you,” Raina quoted the Pak journalist’s post.

  • Pakistan Ball Tampering-Scandal: When Inzamam-ul-Haq Got Angry At Shahid Afridi For Biting The Ball And Getting Banned From Cricket | cricket news

On this day, January 31, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi committed an act that brought shame to his country. The world saw how trio of Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for tampering the ball in 2018. The SuperSport camera crew had caught Bancroft using a sandpaper to tamper the ball between the overs during the Cape Town Test. While these three faced bans, Afridi surprisingly was let go with a suspension of a few matches for doing the same.

In this ODI vs Australia in 2010 on this very date, Afridi bit the ball as if he was eating a big apple. Later, in a TV show, Afridi had admitted that he was wrong in doing so and recalled the incident as something very ’embarrassing’.

Sri Lanka’s match referee Ranjan Madugalle was officiating in that match. He is known for being a very strict referee but lucky Afridi escaped with just a two-match ban.

Shahid Afridi was caught by TV cameras biting the ball on a couple of occasions. It was reported to the on-field umpires by the TV umpire and, after a chat with Afridi, the umpires changed the ball.

Inzamam-ul-Haq had slammed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) then for maintaining lack of discipline in the Pakistan team. He had also said that what Afridi did was ‘unacceptable’ and that Ranjan was way too kind to let him go with just two match bands.

“What Afridi did was unacceptable and more worrying is the fact that he was captain when he tried to tamper with the ball. He didn’t do any service to Pakistan cricket with his actions,” Inzamam told PTI. “The match referee Ranjan Madugalle has been kind to Afridi, giving him just a two-match ban or Afridi could have been in bigger trouble.”

“I hold the board responsible for all that is happening. It shows there is a need to enforce stricter discipline in the team. But the board itself promotes such things by giving unnecessary statements [changing the captain] during a tour,” he said. “Obviously it had a negative effect on the performance of the team and captain,” Inzamam had further said.

During his playing days, Afridi was controversy’s favorite child. Every now and then, he would do something that would either upset the ICC, his own board, his opponents or his teammates. His antics landed him in trouble more than not. Former Pakistan cricketer and spinner Danish Kaneria accused Afridi of mocking his religion in the dressing room as well.
