Adi Vaani, an AI-driven translator, is now available in its beta version, marking a significant step towards preserving tribal languages in India. Developed by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs under the Tribal Pride Year initiative, this tool utilizes artificial intelligence to facilitate communication and understanding between tribal and non-tribal communities. Its primary goal is to safeguard the diverse linguistic heritage of India’s tribal populations. With 461 languages and 71 tribal mother tongues, many are at risk. The translator is currently accessible on the Google Play Store, with plans for iOS and web versions. Adi Vaani addresses the critical issue of language endangerment by offering real-time translation, interactive language learning, and digital preservation of cultural narratives. The tool is a collaborative effort, developed by IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, and IIIT Nawa Raipur, along with contributions from tribal research institutes in Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Meghalaya. The beta version supports languages like Santhali, Bhili, Mundari, and Gondi, with more languages to be added in the future.
