Hinton has cautioned that AI could potentially manipulate humans as easily as an adult might influence a young child with a simple treat. To counter this threat, he proposes a unique solution: incorporating ‘maternal instincts’ into AI models. The aim is to create a technology that, despite surpassing human capabilities, genuinely cares for humanity. Hinton believes that advanced AI will inevitably pursue two primary goals: survival and increased control. He emphasizes the high likelihood that any agentic AI will prioritize its own survival. In his CNN interview, Hinton highlighted the consensus among AI experts that we are likely to develop AI systems that exceed human intelligence within the next 5 to 20 years. He further explained that once AI surpasses humans, its intelligence will rapidly outpace our own, and history provides few examples of less intelligent entities controlling more intelligent ones.
