The Indian government’s MeitY has issued an advisory urging individuals to discontinue the use of WhatsApp Web on their office laptops and computers. The advisory is based on concerns regarding the security of personal data and potential exposure to company administrators and IT personnel. Access to personal chats and files through WhatsApp Web can be exploited through various methods, including malware, screen-monitoring software, and browser hijacking. The advisory highlights the increasing cybersecurity threats in the workplace. The Information Security Awareness Team has flagged WhatsApp Web as a potential security risk, citing it as an entry point for malware and phishing attacks. The government suggests that using office Wi-Fi could also provide companies with some access to employees’ phones, potentially compromising private data. The advisory recommends logging out of WhatsApp Web after use and exercising caution when opening links or attachments from unknown sources.
