The Indian AI landscape is experiencing significant growth, fueled by governmental initiatives and investments from global tech giants. As a result, OpenAI has chosen India to be the location of its first office. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for IT and Railways, highlighted India’s unique position to spearhead future AI advancements. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, acknowledged the country’s high rate of AI adoption, evidenced by a fourfold rise in ChatGPT users within a year. The IndiaAI mission, launched by the Indian government, focuses on developing a comprehensive computing infrastructure, creating indigenous foundational models, and supporting startups and research organizations. Moreover, India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, demonstrating its commitment to the field.
