A surge in OTT subscription scams is posing a significant financial threat to consumers. Fraudsters are exploiting the popularity of streaming services by advertising heavily discounted subscriptions. These offers, often promoted through WhatsApp, are designed to lure users into installing malware and granting access to their banking details. The price difference is substantial; subscriptions usually costing Rs 1,500 are being offered for Rs 500. Once the malware is installed, criminals gain access to sensitive information like banking details, PAN numbers, and Aadhaar data. Cybercrime officials also warn of the risks associated with clicking on ads related to OTT subscriptions in search results, as these can also lead to interactions with scammers.
