The death of Renna O’Rourke, a 19-year-old from Arizona, has brought the dangers of the ‘dusting’ trend into sharp focus. ‘Dusting,’ also known as ‘huffing’ or ‘chroming,’ involves inhaling household cleaners for a temporary high, which can lead to severe health problems. In Renna’s case, her father reported that her boyfriend obtained a keyboard cleaner, and after inhaling it, she experienced cardiac arrest. She was subsequently declared brain dead. Her family is now actively campaigning to educate others about the risks associated with this dangerous practice, encouraging parents to monitor their children’s activities and belongings. Renna’s parents have also started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical bills and therapy costs. This incident echoes a similar event in the UK in March 2024, where a boy died after inhaling toxic substances.
