Afghanistan was struck by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in its southeastern province on Thursday. This event followed a previous earthquake in the Kunar province, according to the German research center. The GFD confirmed that the quake’s origin was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) below the surface.
The latest earthquake is a part of a series of quakes that began earlier this week, causing more than 2,200 deaths and over 3,600 injuries. The earlier quakes left a trail of destruction across the country’s eastern regions, destroying villages and leaving countless people without homes.
On Sunday, a powerful 6-magnitude earthquake caused massive devastation in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. This quake is among the most destructive to have hit Afghanistan in recent years.
The disaster has claimed the lives of approximately 1,400 people, leaving thousands homeless. Aid organizations have sounded the alarm about a shortage of resources. The United Nations, alongside other international bodies, has stressed the urgent need for essential aid, including food, shelter, and medical provisions.
Prior to this recent quake, a significant earthquake in Afghanistan’s Kunar province had already created a dire situation, with villages completely wiped out. The United Nations reported an urgent need for food, shelter, and medical aid. Moreover, it is anticipated that the death toll will climb.
In response to Afghanistan’s difficulties, many countries and international organizations are providing support. India has also contributed to the relief efforts by sending 21 tons of aid, encompassing food, medicine, and other essential assistance.
