Nepal is experiencing widespread youth-led protests, with Gen Z demanding government accountability and transparency. These demonstrations erupted after the government imposed a ban on social media platforms, a move condemned by various groups. A notable symbol of the protests is the ‘Jolly Roger’ flag from the anime ‘One Piece.’ This flag, which is used by the show’s pirate crew, symbolizes freedom, personal beliefs, and unity, aligning with the protesters’ aims. The flag’s adoption by Nepali youth is reminiscent of its use in prior demonstrations, such as in Indonesia, where it was used to voice frustration over corruption and unemployment. The story of ‘One Piece,’ by Eiichiro Oda, follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew as they seek treasure. The anime has a massive global following and has been adapted into a live-action series. The protests began on September 8 in major cities, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, following the government’s social media ban, which was motivated by tax revenue and cybersecurity concerns. The demonstrations have resulted in casualties and injuries, and the Prime Minister and several ministers resigned, and the government later lifted the ban.
