Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has been sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison by the Supreme Court. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in a plot to overturn the government of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The court, with a majority of four out of five judges, found Bolsonaro guilty. The sentencing considered Bolsonaro’s age and health, although the potential maximum sentence was 43 years. Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest, has denied any involvement in the conspiracy and plans to appeal the verdict before a full bench of the Supreme Court. The plot aimed to prevent Lula from taking office after the 2022 elections.
