John Bolton, formerly the US National Security Advisor, voiced his disapproval of President Trump’s high tariffs against India, emphasizing that these tariffs have hindered the negotiation process. Bolton believes the tariff policy is a misstep, and tariffs must be lowered while talks continue toward a resolution. During an interview, he stated that the Trump administration should reduce tariffs while engaging in discussions. Bolton also criticized the 25% tariff imposed on India as a result of India’s purchase of Russian oil, considering it as collateral damage. He contrasted this with China’s situation, which has not been penalized despite importing a larger volume of oil and gas from Russia. Regarding the India-US relationship, Bolton advised that the Indian government should view Trump’s actions as a unique situation and act in its national interest. He explained that this approach should recognize that Trump’s actions are not representative of the broader American perspective. Bolton criticized Trump’s foreign policy, claiming that it lacks an overall national security strategy and is characterized by a transactional approach. Bolton pointed out that trade frictions, particularly tariffs on Indian energy purchases, have contributed to strained relations.
