According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Remal has turned into a severe cyclonic storm, which will hit the land between the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts by Sunday midnight. In view of the arrival of Remal, air services from Kolkata airport have been suspended for 21 hours from Sunday afternoon. Officials said that all cargo and container handling operations will also be suspended for 12 hours from Sunday evening at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata. During this time, railway operations in the port area will also remain suspended.

The IMD said that the weather system will bring heavy to very heavy rains over South and North 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts of West Bengal on May 26 and 27. It will also affect northern Odisha on May 26 and 27. Extremely heavy rainfall may occur in parts of Northeast India on May 27-28. The IMD said that heavy rains are likely over West Medinipur, East Bardhaman and Nadia districts on May 26 and 27. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till May 26.
