Renna O’Rourke, a 19-year-old from Arizona, has tragically died due to the ‘dusting’ challenge, a dangerous social media trend where individuals inhale household cleaners to experience a high. Her father stated that her boyfriend acquired an aerosol keyboard cleaner, leading to Renna’s cardiac arrest after inhalation. Despite being admitted to the ICU for four days, she was later declared brain dead. The trend, also referred to as ‘huffing’ or ‘chroming’, carries significant health risks, including heart failure, as warned by the Cleveland Clinic. Renna’s mother emphasized the easy accessibility of such cleaners and the importance of parental vigilance. The family is now actively campaigning to educate others about the deadly consequences of ‘dusting,’ and has started a GoFundMe campaign to manage medical costs and therapy. Sadly, a similar incident occurred in the UK in March 2024 involving a fatality from inhaling toxic substances.
