Global Democracy Faces Setbacks: Report Highlights Declines Across Numerous Nations

The IDEA report, ‘The Global State of Democracy 2025’, provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of democracy in 173 countries during 2024. It reveals that 94 of these nations experienced a decline in democratic strength, with only one-third showing progress. The report underscores that the most significant impact on democratic systems was observed in areas concerning free and fair elections, access to justice, and effective parliamentary functions. The United States also faces challenges, ranking 35th in representation and 32nd in rights, although it holds a top-10 position (6th) in participation.
