India’s Republic Day parade will feature prominent EU guests this year, spotlighting the fast-tracking EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Malta High Commissioner Ruben Gauci, in an insightful interview, hailed the deal as the ‘Mother of All Deals’, predicting its swift finalization.
The visit by Commission President von der Leyen and Council head Costa symbolizes deep commitment. Gauci noted, ‘It shows India’s top billing for Europe, as evidenced by EU envoy talks with Minister Jaishankar.’ He credited a prior February mission from Brussels with breaking negotiation logjams.
Malta’s perspective adds nuance: its trade deficit with India stands at 10:1 in imports. ‘We aim to export more and balance ties through the FTA,’ Gauci shared. Adhering to EU’s exclusive trade competencies, Malta supports the bloc’s lead while eagerly awaiting outcomes.
‘Tracking since inception, I foresee signatures soon—history in the making,’ Gauci enthused. Beyond trade volumes, the pact targets non-tariff barriers, intellectual property, and sustainable development, aligning with post-pandemic recovery goals.
Geopolitically, the FTA counters protectionism, enhancing supply chain security. It could double trade figures, create jobs, and spur tech transfers. As summits unfold, optimism runs high for a pact that cements India-EU as powerhouse partners in a multipolar world.
