The relationship between India and the United States is currently under strain because of India’s procurement of discounted Russian oil. Former US President Donald Trump has reacted by imposing high tariffs on Indian goods. Amidst this situation, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India by the end of the year. While the exact timing has not been confirmed by either government, the announcement comes as a response to the US tariffs. Doval’s visit to Moscow took place concurrently with a visit by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, with talks focused on the conflict in Ukraine. India-Russia defense ties, including the delivery of the S-400 air defense batteries, were also discussed. Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India and other nations have been buying cheaper Russian oil, prompting Trump to impose tariffs on Indian exports. PM Modi has stated that India will defend its interests amid this situation.
