Rome. The G7 summit began on Thursday at the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia in the Apulia region of Italy. During the opening of the summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni greeted the heads of government and representatives with the Indian tradition of ‘Namaste’, which is being discussed everywhere. Meloni was seen welcoming EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with folded hands. On the first day of the summit, US President Joe Biden, his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were present at the summit along with Giorgia Meloni.

The ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza are expected to dominate the G7 summit to be held from June 13 to 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also arrived to attend the summit. Before leaving for Italy, PM Modi said, ‘At the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, I am travelling to the Apulia region of Italy to attend the G7 Outreach Summit on June 14.

The Prime Minister said that he is happy that he is coming to Italy for the G-7 summit for the first time in his third consecutive term. Modi said, “The discussions in the contact session will focus on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean.

The G-7 comprises the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan. Italy is holding the current presidency of the G7 and is hosting the summit in that capacity. Apart from India, Italy has also invited leaders of 11 developing countries from Africa, South America and the Indo-Pacific region to attend the summit.
