President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil has strongly opposed potential U.S. tariffs of 50 percent, labeling them as politically motivated and lacking sound reasoning. Lula stated his government’s willingness to engage in negotiations that are mutually beneficial, but affirmed that Brazil would not waiver on its democratic principles and national sovereignty. This stance comes in response to tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which Lula views as an act stemming from a ‘witch hunt’ against former President Jair Bolsonaro. The tariffs are seen as a reaction to accusations against Bolsonaro regarding his alleged unlawful stay in power. The Supreme Court’s recent decision, which concluded that Bolsonaro attempted a coup following his defeat by Lula in the 2022 election, has added to concerns about possible further actions from the United States. Lula commended the Supreme Court’s historical decision, emphasizing its role in safeguarding Brazil’s institutions and the rule of law. The court’s ruling, resulting from extensive investigations, also exposed a plot involving plans to assassinate Lula, the Vice President, and a Supreme Court justice. President Lula further argued that the proposed tariff hikes are misleading and irrational, citing the $410 billion surplus the United States has accumulated through bilateral trade with Brazil over the past 15 years. The comments suggest that Brazil is bracing itself for additional potential sanctions following the Supreme Court’s decision. After the court’s ruling, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio indicated a response from Trump’s government on X. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry condemned Rubio’s comments, deeming them as threatening. The ministry emphasized the independence of the Brazilian judiciary and that Bolsonaro was afforded due process. Bolsonaro, who had been under house arrest, was seen leaving his residence in Brasilia for medical care at a local hospital, marking his first public appearance since the court’s decision. He was escorted by police to the DF Star Hospital in Brasilia. A temporary release was granted by Justice Alexandre de Moraes on September 8. The former right-wing leader, 70, had been under house arrest since August, after a ruling that he had violated the precautionary measures imposed upon him. Bolsonaro was already under electronic monitoring through an ankle bracelet.
