Mindanao Hit by 6.1 Earthquake; Follows Devastating 7.5 Quake

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has shaken Mindanao in the southern Philippines, adding to a series of seismic events in the region. This tremor occurred less than two weeks after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused extensive damage and significant evacuations on October 10th. While the full extent of damage from the latest 6.1 quake is under investigation, it underscores the vulnerability of the area to seismic activity. Mindanao lies along the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The earlier major earthquake on October 10th caused considerable disruption, including damage to critical infrastructure like schools and a hospital, as well as power failures. A tsunami warning was issued following that event, prompting coastal residents to seek higher ground due to the threat of dangerous wave heights. Schools in the major city of Davao were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The 7.5 quake was registered at a considerable depth, and the subsequent 6.1 aftershock has been felt across the area.
