Modi’s China Visit: Bilateral Talks with Xi Jinping Planned During SCO Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will engage in bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping on August 31, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This visit marks the first time in more than seven years that PM Modi will travel to China. Further adding to the diplomatic schedule, he is slated to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 1 in Tianjin. These gatherings are drawing international interest, occurring amidst the backdrop of India-US trade disputes, particularly those stemming from U.S. sanctions related to India’s continued acquisition of Russian oil, influenced by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Before the summit, India’s stance indicated a desire for the SCO to issue a strong condemnation of cross-border terrorism.
