The country’s election commission announced on Monday that voting will be conducted in phases. The Election Commission stated, “The dates for the next phases of the elections will be announced accordingly.” According to government media, approximately 55 parties have registered for the elections, of which nine parties will contest seats across the country. Military government opponents are being prevented from contesting the elections. The Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported earlier this month, “Approval and registration of six parties are under review.” According to reports, anti-military opposition groups have either been barred from contesting elections or have refused to participate. Therefore, Western governments have dismissed these elections as a move to strengthen the generals’ power, and it is expected that the army’s representatives will dominate.
