Amidst ongoing protests and unrest, President Donald Trump has approved the deployment of troops to Portland, following a similar move in Los Angeles. Trump’s decision centers around the security of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. The President issued the order through his social media platform, directing the Secretary of Defense to execute the plan. He also stated that the deployed troops would be authorized to use full force. Oregon Governor Kotek and Portland Mayor Wilson have both stated that they do not believe troops are necessary. Governor Kotek has directly communicated to the President and Homeland Security Secretary, asserting that the state can manage its own public safety needs. The mayor echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the city does not require external intervention. The situation is complicated by the history of protests in Portland, which have frequently targeted ICE facilities since the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. The use of a guillotine replica outside the ICE building was cited as a recent concern by security agencies. The Trump administration is claiming that Antifa and domestic terrorists are targeting ICE and other federal institutions.
