New Delhi. Goddess Kali Mukut has been stolen from Jeshoreshwari Temple in Bangladesh. The stolen crown was personally gifted to the Jeshoreshwari Temple by Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Bangladesh in March 2021. The High Commission of India in Bangladesh has expressed “deep concern” over this report.

The gilded silver crown that adorned the head of Goddess Kali went missing on Thursday afternoon, shortly after the temple priest concluded the day’s worship, The Daily Star reported. Later the cleaning staff discovered the crown was missing.

India’s High Commission in Bangladesh has expressed “deep concern” over the reports. “We have seen reports of theft of the crown gifted to Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple (Satkhira) by PM Modi during his visit to Bangladesh in 2021,” the High Commission said in a post on Twitter. “We express deep concern and urge the Government of Bangladesh to investigate the theft, recover the crown, and take action against the perpetrators.”

Jeshoreshwari Temple holds great importance in Hindu mythology, being considered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas spread across India and its neighboring countries. The name “Jesoreshwari” means “Goddess of Jeshore”.

Historical records show that the origin of the temple dates back to the late 12th century, when a “Brahmin” named Anari built a 100-door temple for the Jashoreshwari Peetha (temple). The temple was renovated by Lakshman Sen in the 13th century and finally rebuilt by King Pratapaditya in the 16th century.

According to Hindu mythology, Jeshoreshwari Temple located in Ishwaripur is believed to be the place where the palms and soles of Goddess Sati fell. The goddess is worshiped here in the form of Goddess Jashoreshwari, while Lord Shiva appears in the form of Chanda.
