Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, addressed concerns regarding potential US sanctions on India due to its continued import of Russian oil. He asserted that the economic partnership between Russia and India is secure. Lavrov referenced statements from Indian leaders, who have affirmed India’s right to select its own partners. He indicated that while India is open to discussing trade terms with the US, it will make its own decisions regarding trade, investment, and other collaborations with third countries. Furthermore, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s backing of India’s aspiration for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. During the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Lavrov underscored the importance of reforming the UNSC to encompass contemporary global representation and announced Russia’s support for India’s and Brazil’s applications for permanent seats, as a move to better represent Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
