Keir Starmer, the UK’s Prime Minister, has made significant changes to his cabinet, with Shabana Mahmood being appointed as Home Secretary. Mahmood, a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party, is of Pakistani descent and represents the Birmingham Ladywood constituency. She replaces Yvette Cooper in this role. Mahmood’s family has roots in Mirpur, Pakistan-administered Kashmir. She is a graduate of Oxford University, having studied law at Lincoln College. Prior to entering politics, she spent her childhood in the UK and Saudi Arabia. As Home Secretary, she will oversee issues concerning police, security, and immigration.
