The Nepalese government has revoked its recently imposed ban on social media platforms, a move prompted by violent protests across the country. The demonstrations, fueled by discontent over the initial ban, led to significant unrest, particularly in Kathmandu, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and injuries to over 300. The decision to reverse the ban was made after an emergency cabinet meeting, as stated by the Minister of Communication, Information, and Broadcasting, Prithivi Subba Gurung. The ban had affected 26 social media sites, including major platforms such as Facebook and X. The protests, spearheaded by the ‘Gen Z’ group, involved large-scale demonstrations, and some demonstrators breached the parliament complex, escalating the conflict. The government has instructed relevant agencies to reinstate social media services, and platforms like Facebook, X, and WhatsApp have become accessible again.
