The United States has imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, targeting India’s oil imports from Russia. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that this economic measure, implemented by President Donald Trump, is designed to pressure Russia. According to Vance, the tariffs are a form of ‘aggressive economic leverage’ intended to limit Russia’s financial benefits from its oil sector. Vance also expressed confidence in the US’s ability to mediate an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He pointed to recent concessions from both sides. Vance emphasized the need to halt the ongoing war, citing the loss of life, and contrasted Trump’s approach to Russia with the previous administration’s perceived inaction. The tariffs were imposed following India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.
