Donald Trump has imposed a significant trade sanction on Brazil, implementing a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports starting August 1, 2025. This action is coupled with Trump’s vocal disapproval of the legal proceedings against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, which he labeled a ‘witch hunt.’ In a letter to current Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Trump expressed his high regard for Bolsonaro, stating that the trial is an ‘international disgrace.’ The tariffs are also linked to Brazil’s perceived stance on free elections and digital trade practices. Trump also announced tariffs on other countries, including Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, the Philippines, Moldova and Brunei. Trump warned that the rates could increase if the affected countries retaliate with their own tariffs on American products. He further indicated a willingness to consider adjustments to these measures if Brazil alters its trade policies.
