Umar Khalid has received a setback from Delhi’s Karkardooma Court on the charge of conspiring for the Delhi riots. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Court has refused to grant bail to Umar Khalid in the case of conspiring for the Delhi riots under UAPA. Umar Khalid is an accused in the UAPA case related to the 2020 Delhi riots. Umar Khalid had filed a regular bail petition for the second time in the court, which has been rejected by the court.
The trial court had earlier rejected Umar Khalid’s first bail plea in March 2022. Umar Khalid had filed a new bail plea after not getting relief from the Supreme Court. Umar Khalid had withdrawn his petition seeking relief from the Supreme Court. Khalid had challenged the Delhi High Court’s decision to deny bail in October 2022.
A bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Pankaj Mithal had allowed senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Umar Khalid, to withdraw the petition. Kapil Sibal had told the Supreme Court that circumstances have changed. An attempt has been made to seek bail afresh before the trial court, due to which he is withdrawing the petition.
