The US is seeking to solidify its influence across Asia, from Bangladesh to Afghanistan, with a clear focus on strategic military positioning. The US embassy in Bangladesh aims to deploy troops, a move opposed by local authorities. Simultaneously, former US President Donald Trump has proposed reclaiming the Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan, a move that would allow for the strategic monitoring of China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
The US military is actively trying to counter China’s growing military strength by expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. This involves joint military exercises to enhance regional cooperation. The deployment of advanced Chinese missiles now threatens US bases across the area, including those in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The US is shifting its strategic focus from the Middle East towards the Asia-Pacific to effectively manage China’s expanding influence.
The ongoing military competition between the US and China is influencing the security policies of numerous Asian countries. There’s been a significant increase in US military exercises throughout Southeast Asia during the first half of 2025.
In Bangladesh, a joint military exercise took place between over 100 US soldiers and the Bangladeshi Air Force in Chittagong. A US C-130 Hercules aircraft was deployed to Chittagong for this joint exercise. The location of Chittagong, bordering northeastern India and Myanmar, and the proximity of St. Martin’s Island to the Malacca Strait, highlight the strategic importance of the area. Notably, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has previously accused the US of attempting to destabilize her government after a disagreement over St. Martin’s Island.
Donald Trump has expressed his intent to negotiate with the Taliban to regain control of the Bagram Airbase. However, the Taliban has rejected any handover of the base. This strategic airbase, previously used for MQ-9 Reaper drone operations, is located near China, Iran, Pakistan, and Central Asia, highlighting its critical role in regional security.
US military presence is prominent in Japan, with approximately 50,000 troops stationed at bases in Okinawa, including Yokosuka Naval Base and Kadena Airbase. These bases are essential for maintaining a strategic balance against China and North Korea. Additionally, the US maintains a significant military presence in South Korea with roughly 28,000 troops.
In the Philippines, the US has expanded its military presence since 2023, under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), granting access to nine military bases, including strategic locations like Luzon, Palawan, and Cagayan. Annual joint military exercises are a regular feature.
While the US doesn’t have permanent bases in Thailand, it conducts joint military exercises like Cobra Gold. US combat aircraft and logistical support often operate from Thailand.
Singapore, while not hosting permanent US bases, serves as a key location for US P-8 Poseidon surveillance aircraft and Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). The Changi Naval Base offers essential logistical support to the US Navy.
