A problematic helicopter deal with Russia has created a dilemma for Bangladesh. The Awami League government’s decision to procure two helicopters from Russia has led to complications due to US sanctions. The Tk 4 billion agreement involved a significant upfront payment of Tk 2.98 billion. The aim was to improve law enforcement capabilities and support counter-terrorism initiatives. The US sanctions, targeting the Russian Helicopters company, have blocked the delivery of the aircraft. The situation now presents two unfavorable options: either incur substantial financial losses by canceling the deal or risk diplomatic friction with the United States by proceeding with the import. The helicopters are currently stuck in Russia, adding to the accruing maintenance expenses. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry is trying to negotiate with the US, explaining that the helicopters are meant for civilian and disaster relief purposes.
