The US government, under the direction of Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, is set to overhaul its immigration policies, with a particular focus on the H-1B visa program and green cards. The core of the proposed changes includes a “gold card” program. This initiative would offer permanent US residency to foreign investors who invest USD 5 million. Lutnick confirmed plans to alter the H-1B visa program. He described the gold card as a means of selecting the best individuals to contribute to the country. He mentioned that there is a strong interest in the program, with an estimated 250,000 potential applicants. Trump, in January 2025, expressed continued support for the H-1B visa program. The program allows US employers to employ foreign workers in specialized roles, which he believes is essential for attracting “competent” and “great” individuals. Speaking from the White House, Trump emphasized the significance of drawing skilled individuals. He identified the H-1B visa program as a key tool for supporting various industries and strengthening the economy. He added that quality individuals are needed, which would help in expanding businesses. During Trump’s initial term, restrictions were placed on H-1B visas, due to issues with ‘abuse’ and economic impact. In 2016, Trump criticized the H-1B program for its potential to replace American workers with cheaper foreign labor.
